Description

Yasmeen Cafe is Abdul Hatimi’s answer to a gap he noticed in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast: a neighborhood home to one of the metro’s largest East African communities, but without enough restaurants that reflected that culture. Hatimi, who came from Mogadishu, Somalia, fled to Kenya and then to Atlanta before settling in Kansas City more than 20 years ago, went through years of Uber driving and interpretation work while looking for a space to open a restaurant. He found the building at 1447 Independence Avenue in 2013 and waited five years until it was available. He and his wife Khadija opened Yasmeen Cafe in December 2018. The menu carries Somali staples — rice and chicken suqaar (stir-fried with vegetables and spices), goat, lamb, beef steak, and fish — alongside dishes that reflect Somalia’s history: Somali spaghetti, a legacy of Italian colonial influence; ugali, the starchy polenta-like dish common across East Africa, served with spinach and protein. Sambusas and mandazi (sweet fried dough) sit at the counter; hot chai anchors the drink menu. Regulars call Hatimi and Khadija “dad” and “mom.” KCUR covered the cafe as a cultural crossroads for KC’s immigrant communities in 2023. Halal-certified.
