History

The school opened in 1908 as Catholic High School on Sandusky Avenue. In 1931 the present building was constructed at 18th Street and the school was renamed Bishop Ward High School for Bishop John Ward. A school history by Sister Maureen Craig, formerly posted on the official site, is the source Wikipedia cites for that sequence; the archived page is the durable pointer.1

Athletics

Wikipedia, citing KSHSAA history PDFs, credits the baseball program with 13 state titles, six of them consecutive (2003–2008). The football team won state titles in 1971 and 1973. The boys’ basketball team won a state title in 1938.1

Notable alumni

Wikipedia names MLB pitcher and later Twins pitching coach Neil Allen; sculptor and Air Force astronaut-program candidate Ed Dwight (the first African American test pilot to enter the Air Force training track from which NASA then selected astronauts); MLB pitchers Ray Sadecki and Diego Seguí; and MLB first baseman David Segui.1
