The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) is the public library system of Kansas City, Kansas, still administered by the USD 500 Board of Education. Its Main Library at 625 Minnesota Avenue — downtown, beside the Wyandot National Burying Ground (Huron Cemetery) — opened 23 March 1966 on the site of the demolished Carnegie library. On 28 October 2025 the Board voted to demolish and rebuild Main on the same site and to rehabilitate the former Parker Elementary as a support/branch facility (“Next Chapters”). This is a different institution from the Missouri-side Kansas City Public Library.123
Origins — subscription library to Board of Education
Civil War veteran E.F. Heisler kept a small fee library in his office from 1871; the Wyandotte Library Association formed in 1873.1 The Kansas legislature in 1893 authorized the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education to administer a library; the library came under the Board in 1899 and remains there.4
Sarah Richart (“Benefactor of the Library”) left her estate to the city on condition of a free public library building; with a $75,000 Carnegie pledge that gift produced the Carnegie Library at Huron Place.1 The cornerstone was laid at night under electric arc lights on 6 September 1902 before more than 3,000 people; the Carnegie building stood at 625 Minnesota Ave. (circa 1911 postcard dating on the history page).4
Carnegie demolished; Main Library 1966
Citizens passed a 1958 bond for a modern facility. The Carnegie downtown library was demolished (1958 in Wikipedia’s account; KCKPL gallery text says 1965 for parking for the new building — print both) to clear for the present Main.15 Main opened 23 March 1966 in a building shared with the Board of Education; only the first floor was designed as public library space in the 1960s model of reference stacks and silent reading.13
Main houses system administration and the Kansas Collection / Kansas Room (Wyandotte County and Kansas history, including Wyandot / Huron Cemetery materials).26 Hours (first-party Main page): Mon–Thu 9 a.m.–9 p.m.; Fri–Sat 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sun 1–5 p.m.2
Branches and Carnegie survivors
Wikipedia lists five branches and three mobile libraries. The Argentine Carnegie Library remains; when the downtown Carnegie was demolished it was the sole remaining Carnegie in the city, later listed on the National Register (1998) and used as public and Emerson Elementary school library until 2012.1
Next Chapters — rebuild (2025–)
The Board of Education on 28 October 2025 approved demolishing the existing Main and rebuilding on the same downtown site, and using historic tax credits to rehabilitate former Parker Elementary for administration, support services, and another public branch. Parker work is scheduled first; Main follows. Staff stress Main will not leave downtown.3 The 1964/1966 building’s plumbing, HVAC, and one-floor-public layout are the stated drivers.3
