Providence Medical Center is the acute-care hospital at 8929 Parallel Parkway in western Kansas City, Kansas, founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth as Providence Hospital and moved to its present campus in 1976. The original building at 18th and Barnett / Tauromee was later occupied by Donnelly College and demolished beginning around 2020, with the smokestack retained as a memorial. Since 2013 the hospital has been part of California-based Prime Healthcare, alongside Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth. There is no substantial English Wikipedia article for this hospital; this page rests on first-party, KCUR, and trade sources.123
Founding (1920) — Sisters of Charity
Local institutional histories date the founding appeal to 1918, when Bishop Ward asked the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to open a Catholic hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, during World War I. Mother Mary Berchmans is quoted as placing trust in “providence” — the source of the name.4 The hospital opened 27 December 1920 at 18th and Tauromee, with programs for children with disabilities, an orthopaedic ward, and a school of nursing; free care and kitchen food distribution are part of the founding story in the same institutional timeline.41
KCUR’s 2020 demolition piece confirms the Sisters of Charity founding, a 1920 start, a 1971 merger with St. Margaret Hospital, and the 1976 move to Parallel Parkway.1
Expansion and the Parallel Parkway campus
Mid-century growth (new surgical/obstetric wing 1946; citywide bed campaign to ~200 beds in the 1950s; chapel and renovations 1958) is outlined in the hospitalsdata institutional chronology; treat those mid-century figures as **** pending a primary Sisters or diocesan document.4
In the early 1970s Providence merged with St. Margaret to form Providence-St. Margaret Health Center, affiliated with the Archdiocese.41 The combined center relocated to 89th and Parallel Parkway in 1976, expanding service to western KCK.41
Old building → Donnelly College → demolition
After the hospital left, the seven-story (expanded from three) building at 18th Street and Barnett Avenue became part of the Donnelly College campus. In December 2020 Donnelly announced demolition for greenspace, keeping the north-side smokestack “as a nod to our past.”1
Prime Healthcare (2013–)
Prime Healthcare, a for-profit system based in California, acquired Providence Medical Center and Saint John Hospital (Leavenworth) in 2013.13 Prime’s 2023 ten-year release states more than $60 million invested in the two Kansas hospitals and notes Providence’s 100th anniversary in 2020.3 First-party About copy describes a community hospital affiliated with Prime and with Saint John, more than 1,100 staff, about 200 volunteers, and service to Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and northern Johnson counties.2
