Rockhurst University is a private Catholic, Jesuit university at 1100 Rockhurst Road in midtown Kansas City, Missouri, chartered as Rockhurst College in August 1910 by Fr. Michael Dowling, S.J.1 Its campus occupies the blocks between Troost Avenue and The Paseo, from East 51st Street south to East 53rd and 54th Streets — directly across Troost from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.21 Enrollment was 3,338 in fall 2025.3

History

Founding (1909–1921)

In 1909 Fr. Michael Dowling, S.J., purchased 25 acres at 53rd Street and Troost Avenue for $50,000; the state chartered the institution as Rockhurst College in August 1910.1 Construction of Sedgwick Hall in 1914 allowed high school classes to open that year; college classes began in 1917, held in the same building, and the first class graduated in 1921.41 Rockhurst High School, which shared the origin, later moved to its own campus.1

The university dates its animating tradition to 1521, when Ignatius of Loyola was wounded at Pamplona — the founding story of the Society of Jesus and of the Ignatian pedagogy Rockhurst still claims.4

From college to university (1999)

The institution’s name change to Rockhurst University became official on July 1, 1999, reflecting its expanded graduate offerings.1 (Sources that date the change to 1998 appear to describe the decision rather than the effective date; Rockhurst’s own historical-facts page does not give a date — for the trustee action.)

Saint Luke’s College (2019–2022)

In July 2019 Rockhurst and Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City announced an affiliation agreement under which Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences — a nursing school descended from the late-nineteenth-century hospital training-school movement — would become part of the university.56 The merger completed in 2020.1 Roughly two years after the announcement, Rockhurst’s College of Health and Human Services combined with Saint Luke’s College to form the Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Rockhurst University, offering nursing, speech-language pathology, exercise science, health science, occupational therapy, and physical therapy from certificate through graduate level.56 The college is now housed on the main campus in Sedgwick Hall.6

Campus

Rockhurst’s urban campus is bounded by East 51st Street (north), The Paseo (east), East 53rd and 54th Streets (south), and Troost Avenue (west), with Rockhurst Road (East 52nd Street), Forest, Tracy, and Virginia Avenues running through it.2 Wikipedia describes a 40-acre campus in Kansas City’s cultural district; other secondary accounts give 55 acres, so the figure is unsettled.1

Principal buildings include Sedgwick Hall (1914), the original structure; Massman Hall, which holds admissions, dining, the registrar, and the bookstore; the Greenlease Library; Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Hall; and Mabee Chapel.2 Athletic facilities include the Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse, the Convocation Center, Bourke Field, and soccer, baseball, and softball fields on the east and southeast portions of campus.2

The Greenlease Gallery occupies the Greenlease Library — not Massman Hall. It began as the Van Ackeren Gallery, opened in 1975 to display the Van Ackeren Collection of Religious Art, and was established under its present name in 2000 with funding from Virginia Greenlease. The permanent collection spans the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries and is shown alongside rotating contemporary exhibitions; admission is free.7

Enrollment and athletics

For fall 2025 Rockhurst reported 3,338 students — 1,964 undergraduates and 1,374 graduate students — with a 12:1 student-faculty ratio. Between summer 2024 and spring 2025 the university awarded 1,010 degrees and certificates, including 499 bachelor’s, 242 master’s, and 114 doctoral degrees.3

Athletic teams compete as the Rockhurst Hawks in NCAA Division II, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.18

Troost and the surrounding geography

Rockhurst sits immediately east of Troost Avenue, which since the 1920s has functioned as Kansas City’s most prominent racial and economic dividing line — a boundary produced by redlining, restrictive practices, and blockbusting rather than by natural geography, with Black residents to the east and whiter, more affluent neighborhoods to the west.29 The university therefore straddles the eastern edge of the Rockhill and midtown institutional cluster while addressing a street whose divide remains a live subject of civic argument, including over renaming it.9

Its immediate neighbor across Troost is UMKC’s Volker campus, making the two blocks of Troost between them one of the densest concentrations of higher education in the city.1
