Kansas City Irish Fest is a three-day Irish cultural festival held each Labor Day weekend on Crown Center Square, run by a not-for-profit “dedicated to promoting the culture, music, character and history of Ireland and of the Irish people who call Kansas City home.”1 It was founded in 2003 out of the merger of two smaller neighborhood events — the Brookside and Westport Irish fests — and is almost entirely volunteer-staffed.12 Its scale makes it the closest thing Kansas City has to a single-heritage counterpart to the multicultural Ethnic Enrichment Festival.
Origins
The festival’s own account and Wikipedia agree on the founding mechanism: KCIF “was born of the merger of two successful, smaller neighborhood events, the Brookside and Westport Irish fests.”12 Wikipedia dates the founding to 2003.2 The organization emphasises its independence in unusually direct terms — it “is not affiliated with, or a branch of, or managed by any retail or wholesale business,” and is “not organized by, operated by or a chapter of any group, union or organization other than our own.”1
Its mission is to provide “the best, friendliest and most enjoyable Irish cultural weekend in Kansas City by creating and presenting the best blend of music, education and (great) craic,” with stated commitments to family-friendly programming, opportunities for Irish organizations to promote “positive & peaceful causes,” the study of Irish history and genealogy, volunteer leadership development, and “deepening a sense of community among Irish Americans and all ethnic groups that contribute to the unique flavor and vitality of the Midwest.”1 The executive director is Keli O’Neill Wenzel.1
Programming
Wikipedia’s description of the festival — dozens of musicians, dancers and comedians from around the world across eight stages — dates to its 2009-2011 editions and is not re-verified here.2 The current public schedule spans music, Irish dance, culture-and-travel programming, children’s activities, a Mass, Art in the Park, an Irish Cinema strand, shops and food, and a raffle.3 The 2020 festival was held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.2
⚠ Three unresolved numeric conflicts between the festival’s own copy and Wikipedia. Recorded rather than reconciled.
Claim Official site Wikipedia Attendance ”around 75,000"1 "more than 90,000”2 Volunteers ”nearly 1,000"1 "nearly 1,500”2 Season number ”Now planning our 24th year”1 founded 20032
The season-number conflict is the sharpest: the same official site that says “24th year” also advertises a “Design the Cow: 25th Anniversary Contest” for 2026.3 A 2003 founding makes 2026 the 24th festival if 2020’s virtual edition is counted and the 23rd if it is not, so neither the site’s “24th” nor its “25th Anniversary” is self-evidently right. The About page is also plainly stale relative to the rest of the site. for the authoritative season count.

Nine placings in five years, in four different categories — and one of only two festivals in the record to place in Best Music Festival on the strength of its music programming rather than its cultural framing. Its single win came in 2024, for Best Local Event.
Wikipedia additionally records earlier recognition from the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association’s Visitors Choice Awards: “Best Ethnic Festival” in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and “Best Festival” in 2007 and 2008.2 ⚠ The citation behind that claim points at a CVA awards page that now survives only in the Internet Archive, and the assertion has carried Wikipedia’s “needs more citations” banner since 2008. Treat it as unverified.
