History

The Kauffman Stadium Outfield Fountains were installed when Royals Stadium (later renamed Kauffman Stadium) opened on April 10, 1973. The fountains were commissioned by Ewing Marion Kauffman (ewing-marion-kauffman) — Royals founder — as part of his vision for a stadium that would establish KC’s identity in a way unique among MLB ballparks.1

The fountains run 322 feet across the outfield + include:

  • Multiple cascading levels
  • Choreographed water programs synchronized to Royals events
  • Lighting effects for evening games

The fountains have been featured in:

  • Multiple Royals World Series broadcasts (1985, 2014, 2015)

  • Documentary + film coverage of KC sports + the Royals

Cultural significance

The Kauffman Stadium Outfield Fountains are one of the most-distinctive visual elements of any MLB ballpark + a defining piece of KC sports identity. The combination of the fountains + the Royals’s distinctive royal-blue branding + the crown-shaped scoreboard establishes Kauffman Stadium as one of MLB’s most-photographed ballparks.

The fountains also reinforce KC’s “City of Fountains” identity at international-broadcast scale — every Royals game on national TV showcases the fountains to a national audience.
