Penn Valley Park hosts multiple fountains as part of its 175-acre landscape designed under the George Kessler parks-and-boulevards plan. The park’s elevated position south of downtown KC + its adjacency to the Liberty Memorial makes it one of KC’s most-significant civic landscapes; the fountains contribute to the park’s role as a primary KC public space.

History

Penn Valley Park (penn-valley-park) was designed under the George Kessler (george-kessler) parks-and-boulevards plan that shaped much of early-20th-century Kansas City. The park opened to public use in approximately 1909.1

Multiple fountains have been installed across the park’s history:

  • Original park-development fountains — early 20th century
  • The Firefighters Fountain + Memorial (firefighters-fountain) — 1991; KCFD line-of-duty memorial
  • Various smaller fountains — across decades; tied to park-specific donations or memorials

The park’s role expanded substantially with the construction of the Liberty Memorial (liberty-memorial) on the adjacent ridge in 1926 — establishing Penn Valley as part of KC’s primary civic-memorial corridor.

Architecture + materials

Various; the fountains span from early-20th-century classical limestone design through 1991’s Firefighters Memorial bronze sculpture by Tom Corbin. Each fountain reflects its era.

Current status

All park fountains operate seasonally; drained for winter.

Cultural significance

Penn Valley Park serves as Kansas City’s primary civic-memorial corridor — anchored by the Liberty Memorial to the south + extending through the park’s fountains + memorials. The park hosts:

  • Annual Veterans Day + Memorial Day ceremonies
  • KCFD memorial commemorations at the Firefighters Fountain
  • Civic gatherings + festivals
