Clay County, Missouri

Clay County is one of the core “Northland” counties of the Kansas City metropolitan area, lying directly north of the Missouri River. Organized in 1822 and named for the Kentucky statesman Henry Clay,¹² it holds the county seat of Liberty along with Gladstone, Kearney, Smithville, and Excelsior Springs, and contains a large share of the Northland portion of Kansas City, Missouri. With a 2020 census population of 253,335,³ it is among the most populous counties in the metro. The county is also bound up with the legend of the James brothers: Jesse James was born near present-day Kearney in 1847,⁴ and the 1866 robbery of the Clay County Savings Association in Liberty is widely regarded as the first daylight peacetime bank robbery in the United States.⁵

Formation (1822) + naming (Henry Clay)

Clay County was organized on January 2, 1822, and was named for Henry Clay of Kentucky — the U.S. Representative, Senator, and Secretary of State known as “the Great Compromiser.”¹² It was carved out of the western Missouri frontier in the years just after Missouri’s 1821 admission as a state, part of the wave of organization across the Missouri River valley region later nicknamed “Little Dixie” for its Southern-leaning settlers.⁴

Liberty (county seat) + early history

Liberty was settled in 1822 and shortly afterward became the county seat, a role it still holds.⁶ The town became an early center of education in the region: William Jewell College, a private liberal arts college, was founded in Liberty in 1849.⁶

Liberty’s most famous early-history episode is the robbery of the Clay County Savings Association. The bank occupied a two-story Federal-style brick building constructed in 1859, on the northeast corner of the public square.⁷ On February 13, 1866, a group of former Confederate guerrillas — variously attributed to Jesse James and/or Archie Clement, the band that came to be known as the James–Younger Gang — robbed the bank of at least $60,000 in bonds, coin, and currency.⁵⁷ During the getaway the robbers shot and killed George “Jolly” Wymore, a 19-year-old William Jewell College student, an unarmed bystander.⁷ The robbery is commonly cited as the first successful daylight bank robbery in peacetime U.S. history; the former bank building survives today as the Jesse James Bank Museum.⁵⁷

[!note] On the “1855” date Some accounts date the Clay County Savings Association robbery to the 1850s, but the verifiable date of the robbery is February 13, 1866; the bank building itself was constructed in 1859.⁵⁷ An 1855 founding date for the association could not be independently verified here.

The Jesse James / Northland connections

The James family’s ties to Clay County run deeper than the Liberty robbery. Jesse Woodson James was born on September 5, 1847, in Clay County near the site of present-day Kearney, and his older brother Frank James was born in the county in 1843.⁴ The James family farm near Kearney is preserved and operated as a historic site and museum.⁴ These Northland connections — Kearney as birthplace and farm, Liberty as the site of the first daylight bank robbery — make Clay County a central locale in the James legend. The modern county (population, municipalities, the Northland)

Clay County recorded a population of 253,335 at the 2020 census.³ As a core county of the-northland — the part of the Kansas City metro lying north of the Missouri River — it contains a large slice of Kansas City, Missouri’s Northland neighborhoods alongside its independent municipalities. Among its principal cities are Liberty (the county seat), Gladstone, Excelsior Springs, Smithville, and Kearney.³ The county is part of the Kansas City, MO–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Significance to Kansas City

Clay County is one of the metro’s anchor Northland counties: its growth has driven much of Kansas City’s northward expansion across the Missouri River, and its towns supply a band of suburban and small-city character distinct from the urban core. Its layered history — frontier organization in 1822, William Jewell College, and the James-gang lore centered on Liberty and Kearney — gives the Northland much of its heritage identity within the broader KC story.
