History and name
Claycomo was incorporated in 1949, on the eve of Ford’s plant construction, and its name is a portmanteau taking the first letters of Clay County, Missouri.1 The village appears in census series from 1950 (808 residents) through mid-century growth (1,841 in 1970) and later modest decline to 1,343 in 2020 — a curve typical of small industrial villages whose land area is dominated by plant and infrastructure rather than residential subdivision.1 The village sits in the Northland along U.S. 69 / Missouri 210, on the northeast edge of the Kansas City metro; while the village itself lies wholly within Clay County, the surrounding industrial corridor and the plant site are close to the Clay/Jackson county line.1
Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant
Ford opened the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo in 1951.23 It is today one of Ford’s largest North American facilities by employment, running two production lines that build the F-150 — Ford’s best-selling vehicle and the best-selling truck in the United States for decades — and the Ford Transit full-size van.2 Ford reports roughly 7,000+ hourly and salaried employees at the site, making KCAP the largest private employer in the Northland by a wide margin and orders of magnitude larger than the village’s own resident population.2
Production history at KCAP spans much of Ford’s postwar lineup, including the Ford Fairlane, Maverick, Escort, Contour / Mercury Mystique, Tempo, and various F-Series generations, before consolidating on today’s F-150 + Transit pairing.3
Recent investment. Ford has committed multi-billion-dollar capital upgrades at Claycomo tied to electrification and next-generation F-Series production, including retooling for the electric F-150 Lightning program and expansion of Transit capacity.4
UAW Local 249
Hourly workers at KCAP are represented by UAW Local 249, one of the largest UAW locals in the region.5 The local has a long strike and bargaining history tied to national Ford negotiations, most recently participating in the UAW “Stand Up Strike” of 2023 against the Detroit Three, which produced a new master agreement covering Claycomo workers.6
Municipal dynamic
Because the plant’s footprint, payroll, and assessed value dwarf the village’s ~1,300 residents, Claycomo’s municipal finances and identity are unusually tied to a single industrial taxpayer. The plant is by a wide margin the village’s largest employer and property-tax generator, a dynamic common to small “company-adjacent” incorporations in the postwar Midwest but rare at this ratio in the KC metro.
