Jackson County, Missouri

Jackson County is the principal county of Kansas City, Missouri, and the core of the bi-state metro on the Missouri side of the state line. Organized December 15, 1826 and named for Andrew Jackson, it is one of a small set of U.S. counties with two county seats — Independence and Kansas City. The 2020 census counted 717,204 residents; the Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimate is 732,994, still second in Missouri after St. Louis County.¹²³

Formation (1826) and naming

The Missouri legislature authorized the county on December 15, 1826, naming it for Andrew Jackson — then a U.S. senator from Tennessee and War of 1812 figure, elected president in 1828 and inaugurated in 1829.¹³ Independence, then a small settlement near a spring, was the original seat. Its position on the western edge of organized U.S. territory made it a launching point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails.¹

The county’s own “About Us” page dates the same December 15, 1826 authorization. Its published population figure there (about 654,000) is stale against the Census series and is not used below.³

Dual county seats

Jackson County is one of 33 U.S. counties with more than one county seat: Independence and Kansas City.¹ Independence was the sole seat in the early decades. After the Civil War and the railroads, Kansas City overtook it in size and economic weight. Both cities still hold courthouse functions, with county government split between them — a nineteenth-century arrangement that survives in the modern administration.¹

Truman as Presiding Judge

Before his national career, Harry S. Truman served in Jackson County government. He was elected Presiding Judge of the Jackson County Court in 1926 — an executive/commissioner role, not a judicial one — and held it for roughly eight years, through the 1930 re-election.¹⁴ As Presiding Judge he divided his time between the two courthouses and is credited with a public-works program that included a 230-mile road system, a county hospital, a new Kansas City courthouse, and a substantial remodeling of the Independence courthouse.⁴⁵

That county career is the hinge between the failed Truman & Jacobson haberdashery (closed 1922) and the U.S. Senate. The Grandview Truman Farm Home is the earlier, pre-politics Jackson County site.

Most of Kansas City, Missouri lies in Jackson County; the city also spills into Clay, Platte, and Cass. The county contains Independence, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Grandview, Raytown, and other municipalities.¹ Downtown, most of the historic neighborhoods, the Truman Sports Complex stadiums, 18th & Vine, and the Crossroads all sit inside the county line.

Significance to Kansas City

Jackson County is, functionally, Kansas City’s home county on the Missouri side — the counterpart hub to wyandotte-county across the line. The dual-seat arrangement encodes the trail-era primacy of Independence and the railroad-era rise of Kansas City. The Truman county years tie the courthouse to the region’s most consequential national figure.
