History
Roe farm and streetcar suburb
John Roe, an immigrant from Ireland, settled on 267 acres in 1883 on land that now includes part of the city; the Roe Home (built 1891) stood until 1958, when it was razed for the interchange of Roe Boulevard and Shawnee Mission Parkway.1
In 1905, interurban developer William Strang platted the area as the streetcar suburb Southridge. Strang’s Missouri and Kansas Interurban Railway ran through the district between Rosedale and downtown Overland Park. Single-family construction accelerated in the late 1930s and 1940s as developers subdivided former farm tracts.1
Incorporation and growth
Developer Charles Vawter and the Roeland Park Homes Association led incorporation on July 2, 1951. A series of annexations between 1951 and 1959 produced the present city limits.1
The original municipal pool opened 1958 on land donated by the Roe Estate. A later aquatic facility sits on the east side of the Community Center at 4843 Rosewood Drive (center address 4850 Rosewood Drive); a fabric dome covers the main pool from September through May for year-round use.1
The city publishes a multi-chapter local history series (Roe’ling through the Years) covering government, schools, churches, businesses, and public services, with a timeline and subdivision appendices.2
Education and library
Roeland Park is served by Shawnee Mission USD 512. Schools inside city limits include Roesland Elementary, St. Agnes Elementary, and Bishop Miege High School.1 The Johnson County Library Cedar Roe branch serves the community from Roeland Park.1
