Sugar Creek, Missouri is a city of 3,271 people (2020 census) straddling Jackson and Clay counties on the Missouri River northeast of Kansas City and north of Independence.1 The riverfront here was Upper Independence Landing / Wayne City Landing — a trail-era port for Oregon, California, and Santa Fe traffic — and later the home of Fairmount Park and a major Standard Oil refinery that defined twentieth-century growth.1

History

Indigenous and Lewis and Clark

The Missouri River bottoms here show evidence of Osage presence, as at other river towns.1 On June 25, 1804, the Lewis and Clark expedition camped on an island opposite modern Sugar Creek.1

Wayne City Landing

In the mid-1800s the riverfront was a supply port for Independence and westbound trails, first as Upper Independence Landing, then Wayne City Landing (after army officer Anthony Wayne). Wayne City is on the National Register as a historic place; it received Oregon, California, and Santa Fe traffic. In 1850 a railroad west of the Mississippi linked Wayne City and Independence.1

Fairmount Park

From the early 1890s into the 1930s, the area hosted Fairmount Park, a major pleasure resort with hotel, theater, lake, and rides — including a roller coaster once billed among the world’s largest — reached by streetcar from Kansas City.1 (The Wiki already holds a dedicated Fairmount Park building page; this city page treats the park as local context, not a second full narrative.)

Refinery town

In 1903 Standard Oil of Indiana bought land on the northern edge of the city; a refinery opened a year later and drew Eastern European workers. By 1918 the townsite had more than 800 residents.1
