Carolyn Mitchell

Carolyn Mitchell (1951–2024) was the first Black female firefighter in the Kansas City Fire Department and later the department’s first Black female captain in fire suppression, whose advocacy left a lasting institutional mark on how KCFD accommodates women.

Biography

Joining KCFD

Mitchell entered the KCFD Fire Academy in 1977 alongside Ann Wedow and Kathy Kline (spelling of Wedow’s surname varies across sources), among the department’s first female firefighters of any race — white and Black women integrating the department in the same cohort. Wedow and Kline’s later gear-and-facilities discrimination lawsuit became a nationally cited federal appeals precedent; see women-in-kcfd-and-kcpd for the fuller institutional history.¹²

Career

Mitchell went on to become a Fire Apparatus Operator and an instructor at the KCFD fire academy, and later became the department’s first Black female captain in suppression. She served on the executive board of IAFF Local 42.¹² KCFD has credited improvements including gender-neutral bathrooms, private bunk rooms, and women’s-cut bunker gear as part of the institutional legacy of Mitchell’s and Wedow’s advocacy.¹

Later years and death

In retirement, while residing in a memory-care facility, Mitchell reportedly still pulled fire alarms when fire and EMS crews visited — staff said it brought her joy and sometimes briefly restored her memory. She died November 18, 2024, at age 73. Her funeral service was held at Mt. Moriah Newcomer & Freeman Memorial Home.¹²
