Donald J. Hall Sr. (July 9, 1928 – October 13, 2024) was the longtime chairman and CEO of Hallmark Cards and one of Kansas City’s most consequential civic philanthropists. As CEO and president from 1966 to 1986, he led the family company through its greatest period of growth; as board chairman he remained a central figure in Hallmark and Crown Center into the twenty-first century. The Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art carries his name.
Biography
Donald Joyce Hall was the son of Hallmark founder Joyce C. Hall. He became chief executive officer and president of Hallmark in 1966, succeeding his father, and served in that role until 1986.12 Hallmark’s own tribute materials describe that period as the company’s “greatest period of growth.”1
He later served as chairman emeritus of the Hallmark board — the second board chairman in the company’s history after his father — while his son Donald J. Hall Jr. became executive chairman.23
Hall died October 13, 2024, at home in Mission Hills, Kansas, at age 96, surrounded by family.1 Union Station and other civic institutions marked his death publicly.2
Crown Center and civic work
With his father, Hall was central to the development of Crown Center on land surrounding Hallmark’s Kansas City headquarters beginning in the late 1960s — a multi-decade urban redevelopment project that remains a defining feature of midtown Kansas City.4 Hallmark corporate history credits the father-son partnership with that vision.4
Through the Hall Family Foundation and related philanthropy, the family supported arts and civic institutions including the Nelson-Atkins (the sculpture park named for him) and broader Kansas City cultural infrastructure.5
