a family-owned neighborhood coffee shop in Hyde Park, opened late May 2025 by Christine (“Chrissy”) and Robert Kehoe in the former Mother Earth Coffee space. Named for 1888, the year landscape architect George E. Kessler was commissioned to design Hyde Park. Tier 1 (independent, family owner-operated).

Description

1888 Coffee House is a family-owned neighborhood coffee shop at 3504 Gillham Rd in Kansas City’s Hyde Park, opened the weekend of May 31, 2025 in the space formerly occupied by Mother Earth Coffee (which closed in March 2025).123 Owners Christine (“Chrissy”) and Robert Kehoe moved their family from south Johnson County into Hyde Park and built the shop as a community hub, decorated with an antique Kansas City motif — vintage furniture, historic postcards, old telephones, a large neighborhood map.14

The name pays tribute to George E. Kessler, the landscape architect who in 1888 was commissioned to transform a wild ravine into Hyde Park — one of Kansas City’s first planned neighborhoods.4 The shop’s coffee is small-batch drum-roasted by a partner Kansas City roaster (sourced locally; not roasted on-site).4

Local-roots context

The Kehoes are recent Hyde Park residents who moved their family into the neighborhood and approached Mother Earth’s owner, Joe Parisi, about continuing a coffee shop in the space — an intentional act of neighborhood stewardship rather than a generic café launch.1
