1VP Restaurant is a Jamaican restaurant at 6024 Troost Avenue, opened in the summer of 2020 by chef Patrick Bogle and his wife and business partner Arielle James. Its own tagline is “Authentic Yard Jamaican Cuisine with a Twist”: jerk chicken, oxtail, curry chicken and goat, ackee and saltfish, callaloo, rice and peas, with clearly labeled vegan plates and house-made juices, served mostly to-go from a building with its own parking lot that doubles as a catering and event venue. In August 2026 it marked its sixth anniversary with a ticketed “Kansas City Summer Fest” of dancehall and reggae acts on the restaurant lawn.

Description

1VP occupies a building at 60th and Troost with its own parking lot and a lawn — assets the owners use for catering and as an event venue in addition to the restaurant.1 The Pitch, which has covered it twice, framed the pitch plainly in 2024: “Jamaican isn’t the most popular cuisine in Kansas City. It isn’t even in the top 5,” and then, of the food, “This is comfort food, but it’s not plain and simple. It’s Jamaican food!”1

The menu the Pitch described at opening ran from jerk chicken, crispy fried chicken, oxtail and curry chicken to the dishes that mark a kitchen cooking for a Jamaican audience rather than a tourist one — braised kidneys, goat-head soup, peanut porridge — plus breakfast and brunch fare, fresh-squeezed juice, and a chocolate bread pudding.2 By 2024 the Pitch was pointing readers to jerk chicken tacos with rice and peas, oxtail with extra gravy, and a menu of seafood, pasta, sandwiches and wings “with well-labeled vegan items.”1 Third-party menu mirrors list ackee and saltfish, callaloo and saltfish, buttered bean and saltfish, rice and peas and fried plantains; the Registry has not verified those prices against a first-party source.3

The Instagram bio reads “Authentic Yard Jamaican Cuisine with a Twist,” and the account in summer 2026 was given over to the restaurant’s sixth-anniversary celebration: a “Kansas City Summer Fest” on Saturday, August 15, 2026, 2–10 p.m., staged on the restaurant lawn with dancehall and reggae performers Charly Black, Demarco, Alaine and Anthony Grant and DJs Chilly, Candy and Jayt, with tickets from $45 to $100 sold through Eventbrite.45 The Kansas City Defender’s guide to the city’s Black-owned restaurants lists 1VP as “a rising name on every current list of the city’s best Black-owned spots, earning its place plate by plate.”6

Ownership and history

Patrick Bogle, a chef, and Arielle James, his wife and business partner, opened 1VP Restaurant at 6024 Troost Avenue in the summer of 2020 — a pandemic-year opening — with hours that initially ran 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday.2 The Pitch noted the opening in its weekly Dish & Drink column that fall without biographical detail, and no later profile of the couple has surfaced; where they cooked before 1VP, and whether either is Jamaican-born, are undocumented. What the name “1VP” stands for is likewise not stated in any source the Registry could find.

The restaurant has trimmed its hours since opening — third-party listings now show an 11 a.m. opening and a Sunday closure — and has leaned into catering and events, using its lot and lawn for functions and, in 2026, for the anniversary festival.714 Its sixth anniversary in August 2026 dates the opening to August 2020 or thereabouts.54

The space

6024 Troost sits at the south end of the Troost corridor’s restaurant cluster, a few blocks south of the 55th–59th Street stretch (Barbacoa, Gael’s, the bakeries) that KCUR toured in 2025 — a tour that did not include 1VP.8 The building’s prior use is undocumented.
