Go Chicken Go at 51st & Troost is the first Missouri location (1986) of the Hendrix family’s Kansas City, Kansas fried-chicken chain, which began in 1969 when Bill and Mary Hendrix started frying chicken inside their Go Gas filling station and soon pulled out the pumps. The Troost store is a dine-in and drive-thru shop open until 11 p.m. most nights and 1 a.m. on weekends, frying never-frozen chicken in a nine-piece cut, plus the fried gizzards and livers with G-Sauce that KCUR calls the thing “you won’t see at many joints.” The Pitch’s readers made Go Chicken Go runner-up for Best Fried Chicken in 2025.
Description
The Troost shop is a standalone building with a dining room and a drive-thru at the north end of the 51st–55th Street stretch of Troost that KCUR toured in 2025 — “a legend,” in the station’s phrase: “Frying birds since 1969, you can’t really go wrong here … They’re known for their fried chicken sandwich – just lettuce, mayo and cheese. You’ll also want to grab a side of fried gizzards, something you won’t see at many joints. Trust us.”1 Reviewers describe heavy drive-thru traffic; DoorDash’s Troost listing carries a 4.3 rating over more than 15,000 orders.2
The product is the same across the chain. Chicken is never frozen and is cut nine ways rather than eight, yielding two side breasts and a center breast — “the unique center breast is a customer favorite.”3 Breading is hand-done; the house G-Sauce (sold by the bottle) goes on everything, and fried gizzards and livers are sold by the half or full order, separately or mixed.34 Feast’s Jenny Vergara, recommending it on KCUR in 2018, suggested two tenders with Go Sauce and coleslaw, mixed together; a listener the same year called it “a little bit trashy, a little bit tacky, but the fried chicken is amazingly good.”5 Sides are mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad and corn; dessert is cheesecake.4
Ownership and history
Bill and Mary Hendrix ran Go Gas, a service station at 7th Street and Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, and decided to sell fried chicken inside it. The chicken, gizzards and livers outsold the fuel; the pumps came out, the name changed, and Go Gas became the first Go Chicken Go in 1969.36 That original later moved to 59 N. 7th Street at Central — see go-chicken-go-kck.37 In the 1970s the couple and their children opened two more stores, at 38th and Leavenworth Road next to the Milkhouse and in the former Dee’s Hog House in the West Bottoms; both later closed.37
In 1985 the “Hendrix Boys” — Bill, Mike and Dennis — bought the business from their parents and expanded it to five locations: 5101 Troost in 1986 (the first in Missouri), Olathe (1000 S. Harrison St.) in 1990, State Avenue in KCK in 1996 and Shawnee Drive in KCK in 2000.367 Today the company is owned by two of the brothers, Bill and Mike, with Mike’s daughter Andrea Lowe; Alex Lowe directs operations and is identified by the Kansas City Star as president. The Star and Startland describe it as a third-generation family business based in Overland Park.378 Several employees “have been with the company since the beginning.”3
The chain’s first new store in a quarter century, at 380 NE Vivion Road in the Northland, was announced in September 2024 for a former Taco Bueno and opened in 2025 as the sixth location.796 Lowe’s statement at the time: “We are incredibly grateful to Kansas City for embracing Go Chicken Go through the years. Expanding into the Northland feels like the perfect next step in our journey.”7
The space
5101 Troost sits at the north edge of the Rockhill Ridge / Troostwood blocks of the university corridor, with Rockhurst and UMKC to the south; Tripadvisor files the shop under “Rockhill.”110
