Go Chicken Go’s 7th Street store at 59 N. 7th Street in downtown Kansas City, Kansas is the company’s original location — the successor to the Go Gas filling station at 7th & Kansas Avenue where Bill and Mary Hendrix started frying chicken in 1969 and soon pulled out the pumps. It is a carryout-and-delivery shop (no dining room) open until 11 p.m. nightly and 1 a.m. on weekends, frying the same never-frozen nine-piece chicken, gizzards, livers and G-Sauce as the five stores that grew from it. The Hendrix family’s third generation still owns the company.
Description
The 7th Street shop is the smallest format in the chain — carryout and delivery, no dining room or drive-thru — on the 7th Street Trafficway a block north of Minnesota Avenue in downtown KCK, across from the 7th Street Casino block.1 A local food writer who had worked at a gas station across the street from the original recalled watching “steady customer traffic for decades.”2 KCUR’s Shannon Carpenter, recommending Go Chicken Go in 2025, specifically named “the Kansas City, Kansas franchise,” which “easily satisfies everyone, and has gained a cult following over their 50 years.”3
What it sells is the company standard: chicken that is never frozen, cut nine ways to yield two side breasts and a center breast (“a customer favorite”), hand-breaded and fried; fried gizzards and livers by the half or full order; the house G-Sauce; strips, wings, a $4.99 chicken sandwich and wrap; and mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad and corn.45 Feast’s Jenny Vergara’s 2018 order — two tenders with Go Sauce and coleslaw, mixed together — still works from the same menu.6
Ownership and history
Bill and Mary Hendrix operated Go Gas, a service station at 7th Street and Kansas Avenue, and “thought it would be a good idea to start selling fried chicken inside the gas station.” The chicken, gizzards and livers “soon became a huge hit and the gas pumps were removed, the name was changed, and Go Gas became the first Go Chicken Go in 1969.”4 The Kansas City Star’s 2024 telling adds that it “took off so fast that they pulled out the gas pumps.”7 The store was later moved a few blocks north to the present building at 7th and Central — 59 N. 7th Street; a 2017 blog account places the move in the early 1970s, which the company has not dated.42
Through the 1970s Bill and Mary, with their children, opened two more Go Chicken Gos in KCK — at 38th and Leavenworth Road next to the Milkhouse, and in the former Dee’s Hog House in the West Bottoms; both later closed.47 In 1985 sons Bill, Mike and Dennis Hendrix bought the company from their parents and, over fifteen years, built it to five stores: 5101 Troost (1986), Olathe (1990), 8017 State Avenue in KCK (1996) and 4111 Shawnee Drive in KCK (2000).487 The company today is owned by Bill and Mike Hendrix and Mike’s daughter Andrea Lowe, with Alex Lowe as president directing operations from an Overland Park office; family members manage individual stores, and several employees date to the company’s beginning.479 A sixth store, at 380 NE Vivion Road in the Northland, opened in 2025 — the first new location in 25 years.8710
