ABC Cafe

ABC Cafe (釗記餐廳) is an owner-operated Cantonese restaurant and all-day dim sum house in a strip-mall storefront at 10001 W. 87th St. in Overland Park, Kansas, long regarded as one of the Kansas City metro’s premier destinations for Hong Kong–style dim sum.¹²

Description

ABC Cafe is a cozy Chinese kitchen specializing in authentic Cantonese cooking and an extensive, made-to-order dim sum selection served all day.³ The dim sum menu alone spans three photographed pages, and the broader menu reaches into adventurous Cantonese territory.² Signature plates include salt & pepper tofu (topped with sautéed jalapeños, fried shallots, and green onion), shrimp dumplings, and seven-flavor mushroom, alongside stir-fries, noodle dishes, fried rice, and lunch specials.¹³ The dining room is outfitted with round family-style tables and lazy Susans in the manner of larger-city Chinatown restaurants, and is frequently busy at peak hours.² The restaurant was named runner-up for best dim sum in Kansas City in the 2015 Feast 50.⁴

Ownership and history

ABC Cafe opened in late 2010, originally founded by husband-and-wife team Jacky Lee and Cindy Chung (also rendered Cheung), who built the restaurant’s reputation as a Cantonese and dim sum mainstay over its first decade.⁴ When the original owners retired around their ten-year mark, husband-and-wife operators Derrick and Joanne Lam took over the business, continuing it under the ABC Cafe name; as of an October 2024 report they had owned and operated the restaurant for roughly four years (≈2020).⁵

The Lams have remained hands-on local operators. Having made several trips to Mexico over the years and grown well acquainted with Mexican cuisine, they opened a second concept, Tacos Borrachos, in fall 2024 — two doors down from ABC Cafe at 10049 W. 87th St. in the same Overland Park shopping center. Derrick Lam told the Johnson County Post: “If we were going to open something in the same shopping center, we knew we didn’t want to take anything away from ABC (Cafe), but we also wanted to bring something new.”⁵
