ABC Cafe (釗記餐廳) is an owner-operated Cantonese restaurant and all-day dim sum house in a strip-mall storefront at 10001 W. 87th St. in Overland Park, Kansas, long regarded as one of the Kansas City metro’s best-known kitchens for Hong Kong–style dim sum.12

Description

ABC Cafe is a compact Chinese kitchen specializing in Cantonese cooking and an extensive, made-to-order dim sum selection served all day.3 The dim sum menu alone spans three photographed pages, and the broader menu reaches into adventurous Cantonese territory.2 Signature plates include salt & pepper tofu (topped with sautéed jalapeños, fried shallots, and green onion), shrimp dumplings, and seven-flavor mushroom, alongside stir-fries, noodle dishes, fried rice, and lunch specials.13 The dining room is outfitted with round family-style tables and lazy Susans in the manner of larger-city Chinatown restaurants, and is frequently busy at peak hours.2 The restaurant was named runner-up for best dim sum in Kansas City in the 2015 Feast 50.4

Ownership and history

ABC Cafe opened in late 2010, originally founded by husband-and-wife team Jacky Lee and Cindy Chung (also rendered Cheung), who built the restaurant’s reputation as a Cantonese and dim sum mainstay over its first decade.4 When the original owners retired around their ten-year mark, husband-and-wife operators Derrick and Joanne Lam took over the business, continuing it under the ABC Cafe name; as of an October 2024 report they had owned and operated the restaurant for roughly four years (≈2020).5

The Lams have remained hands-on local operators. Having made several trips to Mexico over the years and grown well acquainted with Mexican cuisine, they opened a second concept, Tacos Borrachos, in fall 2024 — two doors down from ABC Cafe at 10049 W. 87th St. in the same Overland Park shopping center. Derrick Lam told the Johnson County Post: “If we were going to open something in the same shopping center, we knew we didn’t want to take anything away from ABC (Cafe), but we also wanted to bring something new.”5

Description ceiling — the operator publishes no dish descriptions. A dedicated 2026-08-13 pass for first-party description copy came back empty at every tier: (a) the MealKeyway/MenuSifu storefront renders each of the 175 items as name, price and photo only — no description line in the category list, and the item-detail panel opened for sampled items across the Chef Special, Special Dishes and Dim Sum categories likewise shows only name, quantity and price;6 (b) the official site publishes an About Us paragraph and a photo gallery but carries no text menu at all — abccafeks.com/menu is a gallery page, not a dish list;3 (c) Internet Archive captures of abccafeks.com from 2021 through 2025, including the retired /menu/ page, show the same gallery-plus-hours layout with no dish descriptions in any capture.8 The five press-sourced descriptions below are therefore the ceiling available from first-party and reputable-press material; the remaining lines are name-and-price by the operator’s own choice, not by omission on our part.
