AR’s Breakfast & Brunch is an independent, locally owned Mexican-American breakfast and brunch restaurant in downtown Overland Park, Kansas, opened in June 2023 by veteran KC-metro restaurateur Oscar Anivar Romero. Named in tribute to his father, Anivar Romero, the restaurant drew lines out the door within its first months and has since grown into a multi-location KC concept.
Description
AR’s Breakfast & Brunch serves a Mexican-American breakfast and brunch menu by day, blending classic American breakfast fare with Mexican flavors and street-food influences.12 Signature dishes include horchata waffles, chorizo bowls, churro cinnamon pancakes, fajita omelets, and chilaquiles, alongside conventional offerings such as crepes, skillets (including a Mexican skillet with chorizo, peppers and jalapeños), omelets, country-fried steak, biscuits and gravy, avocado toast, French toast, quesadillas, and salads.23 The restaurant also pours brunch cocktails — sangrias, bloody Marys, and mimosas — and turns into a lounge on some evenings.12
The Overland Park flagship sits at 8021 Metcalf Avenue in the downtown Overland Park district. Posted hours are roughly 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Friday and 6:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday–Sunday.24
Ownership and history
AR’s was founded by Oscar Anivar Romero, who has worked in the restaurant industry for nearly two decades, primarily in the Kansas City metro (and, by some accounts, Houston).1 Romero is originally from Turitzio, Michoacán, Mexico; he and business partner Norberto Romero (unrelated, but from the same Mexican town) drew on family experience as street vendors in Texas before building their KC restaurants.5 The restaurant’s name pays homage to Oscar’s father, Anivar Romero, and his dream of restaurant ownership.3
The Overland Park location opened in June 2023 and quickly became popular, with lines reportedly out the door within weeks.15 “A month and a half into this location, we knew that we needed to have a bigger location,” Romero told The Kansas City Star.1 A second AR’s location followed in Olathe in late 2023.5 Romero subsequently launched a related “Snack Bar” Mexican street-food concept in Lenexa (announced 2024) and the business operates an additional AR’s location in Westport (4117 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO).53 The business is independently and locally owned, with no corporate parent.5
