Asian Pearl is a family-run pan-Asian restaurant at the northeast corner of 119th Street and Ridgeview Road in Olathe, open since the spring of 2010. In July 2025 its founding owners announced it would close because the lease was ending — and then it didn’t: a new owner, Jin Wang, took over the space and the name by September, kept the entire staff and the menu, and added Tuesday service. The menu is American-Chinese at its core (General Tso’s, orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp, Mongolian beef) with excursions into Korean daeji bulgogi, XO tofu, salt-and-pepper head-on shrimp, udon and Singapore mei fun, and a gluten-friendly section.

Description

Asian Pearl sits in a strip center at 119th and Ridgeview in west Olathe, a few blocks east of K-7. Its own description: “a family-owned and operated restaurant … committed to offering you the most memorable dining experience,” serving “fresh, delicious Asian cuisine … in a comfortable setting surrounded by original artwork, bamboo, and comfortable seating,” with a chef who “has more than 30 years of experience.”1 The Johnson County Post has described it as “locally owned” and “Asian fusion,” and the restaurant itself calls the menu “Pan-Asian, with influences from multiple Asian cultures.”23

The menu reads accordingly. A Specialties section carries the American-Chinese standards — General Tso’s, orange, sesame and honey walnut chicken or shrimp, triple delight, house pan-fried noodles — and a Traditional Favorites section covers sweet and sour, yu xiang, Hunan, kung pao, curry and moo shu.4 Around them are Korean daeji bulgogi (spicy barbecue pork), XO tofu and shrimp in preserved-seafood sauce, black pepper beef, Beijing shrimp, a seafood tofu pot, salt-and-pepper squid and head-on shrimp, mapo tofu, Cantonese chow mein, Singapore-style mei fun, udon, pad thai and a crab meat and fish maw soup.4 There are gluten-friendly, “healthy mix & match” and kids’ sections; customers on the restaurant’s own review feed single out the gluten-free options, the Sichuan eggplant and the beef stew noodle soup.41 Lunch platters run Monday–Friday 11 to 3 with soup, an egg roll or rangoon, and rice.4

Press in 2025 named the crowd favorites as sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, honey walnut shrimp, moo shu pork, crab rangoon, orange chicken and green pepper beef.253

Ownership and history

Asian Pearl opened in spring 2010 at 18138 W. 119th St. and ran for fifteen years under its founding owners, who are not named in any press coverage found.2 The business’s online-ordering site describes it as “family-owned and operated,” and a customer review on the same site describes “the lady and gentleman that I always see working there (maybe the owners?)” — consistent with an owner-operated couple, though which ownership era the review describes is unclear.1

In July 2025 the restaurant announced on social media that it would close, “citing the upcoming end of the restaurant’s lease” — “Your support has meant the world to us, and we are deeply grateful for every visit, smile, and story over the years.”25 The Kansas City Star reported the closure on July 17 and the Johnson County Post on July 29; neither carried a closing date, and the restaurant remained open in the meantime.52

By early September the story had reversed. Jin Wang had taken over the restaurant and, the Post reported on September 2, 2025, would keep it open: “The staff are all staying. We’ll keep the same name, same restaurant menu, everything’s the same,” Wang said, while planning “exciting enhancements ahead.”3 The Star ran the same news under the headline “Johnson County’s Asian Pearl will stay open under new owner.”6 One immediate change: the restaurant, which had closed on Tuesdays, went to seven-day service — Monday–Thursday 11–9, Friday–Saturday 11–10, Sunday noon–9 — hours that still hold a year later.31 Wang’s background and prior ventures are not described in the coverage.

The lease question that prompted the 2025 closure announcement — whether Wang signed a new lease at the same address, and on what term — is not addressed in any source found.
