Beckmann Violin Shop is a family-run violin maker and repair atelier in Kansas City’s Crossroads district, where Ken Beckmann — a nationally recognized award-winning luthier — has built and restored professional-grade stringed instruments since 1989, now joined by his son Matt.
Description
Beckmann Violin Shop occupies a suite in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, where founder Ken Beckmann has been producing and restoring high-grade stringed instruments since opening in 1989. Ken is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and has accumulated multiple awards at Violin Society of America competitions. His instruments are played by professional musicians in American orchestras and on concert stages across North America and Europe — a track record spanning more than forty years of active making.
The shop offers new instruments from Ken’s own hand, curated inventory of fine instruments and bows, appraisals, and full repair and restoration services. It is not a volume retailer: the emphasis is on craftsmanship and fit for professional and serious student musicians. Rentals and instrument selection services are handled by Matt, who joined the business full-time around 2014 after earning a Master of Music from New England Conservatory of Music and becoming a performing cellist with the Kansas City Symphony.
The Beckmann operation is one of the few shops in the KC metro where a working instrument maker produces violins on-site — alongside repair and restoration work — rather than simply selling instruments made elsewhere.
Ownership and history
Kenneth K. Beckmann was born in Springfield, Illinois and raised in the Chicago area. He studied string bass performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before leaving school in 1979 to pursue violin making full-time. He trained under Paul Schuback in Portland, Oregon and Peter Shaw in Houston, Texas, and participated in restoration workshops at Oberlin College under Vahakn Nigogosian. His longest formative influence has been a 20+ year association with luthier and educator Amos Hargrave, whose proportional and design methods deeply shaped Ken’s making approach.
Ken opened the Beckmann Violin Shop in the Kansas City area in 1989 and has operated continuously here ever since — more than 35 years in the metro. His son Matt Beckmann grew up around music in Kansas City (both parents were involved in the musical community), earned a chemistry degree from St. Olaf College and a Master of Music from New England Conservatory, and relocated back to Kansas City in 2014 with his wife Alyssa. Matt co-founded the Kansas City Suzuki Academy in 2015 and now performs with the Kansas City Symphony alongside his shop work.
