Billie’s Grocery is a health-forward, mostly-organic scratch café, bakery and grab-and-go market founded by nutritional therapist and serial KC restaurateur Robin Krause. The original opened in Midtown Kansas City, MO in 2020; the second and larger location — covered by this page — opened in December 2023 in the Ranch Mart North shopping center in Leawood, KS.
Description
Billie’s Grocery is a “dietary and lifestyle friendly” restaurant and bakery serving mostly organic, nutrient-dense whole foods, with menus that cater to both meat-eaters and plant-based diners.1 The concept blends a sit-down café (breakfast/brunch plus an all-day menu), a scratch bakery producing gluten-free and dairy-free baked goods, and a retail/grab-and-go component.1 Popular dishes include the gluten-free sesame fried chicken salad and the “lazy sushi bowl.”2
The Leawood location, in the northeast corner of Ranch Mart North at West 95th Street and Mission Road, is an all-white, sleek space more than double the size of the Midtown spot. It adds a wrap-around outdoor patio, a coffee and cocktail bar, an expanded grab-and-go area stocked with house-made soups, sauces, dressings, meals and sides, and an in-house floral department selling fresh flowers to go.3
Ownership and history
Billie’s Grocery was founded by Robin Krause, a Nutritional Therapist Practitioner and Certified Herbalist who is a longtime fixture of the Kansas City food scene. Per Feast Magazine, Krause founded Filling Station Coffee in 2004 (growing it to four locations), opened Soho Bakery (later sold to Messenger Coffee), and created Unbakery and Juicery; she has also been associated with Apothé wellness/apothecary and Billie’s Juicery.45
The business “began as a tribute to Robin Krause’s father,” whose fatal heart attack at 63 motivated her focus on healthier eating.5 The original Billie’s Grocery opened in 2020 at 3216 Gillham Plaza in Midtown Kansas City, MO — a roughly 5,000-square-foot, 125-seat whole-foods restaurant, bakery, coffee shop and cocktail bar.4 The Leawood location celebrated its grand opening the weekend of December 2–3, 2023, marking the brand’s second location.6
Seed note: the intake seed referenced “Alfred & Co. / Alfred’s” in connection with the owner. That connection is not corroborated by the sources reviewed (which document Filling Station, Soho Bakery, Unbakery/Juicery, and Apothé).
