Bisou

Bisou is a European-inspired (French-leaning) coffee shop and café on Kansas City’s Westside, opened in February 2024 by artist and entrepreneur Cait Marie Benedict. The name is French for “kiss,” chosen to signal the warm, intimate atmosphere Benedict wanted. She built the café into the ground floor of a Westside building while running her own Second Story Salon & Spa upstairs — a deliberate structure she described as “my upstairs will pay for my downstairs.” Bisou serves espresso drinks, teas, wine, sweet and savory pastries, and house-made vegetarian breakfast burritos, and doubles as a curated bookshop, all sourced from local KC-area suppliers.

Description

Bisou is a European-inspired coffee shop and café on the Westside, described in press and on its own site as a French-leaning room serving coffee, pastries, wine, and curated books.¹² The aesthetic is minimalist-French — natural light, cozy seating, greenery — with shelves of books for sale ranging from classics to coffee-table volumes.² The name “Bisou” means “kiss” in French, chosen to convey the warm, welcoming, intimate atmosphere owner Cait Marie Benedict wanted to create.³⁴

The menu centers on espresso-based drinks (lattes, Americanos), tea, and a small food program of sweet and savory pastries plus three house-made vegetarian breakfast burritos.² Bisou leans on KC-area suppliers: coffee from Maps Coffee & Chocolate in Lenexa, tortillas from Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio in KCK, and pastries from Blackhole Bakery in KCMO, with custom syrups developed in-house.³ The café occupies the ground floor of a Westside building; Benedict’s own Second Story Salon & Spa operates upstairs.³⁴ See westside.

Bisou is the project of Cait Marie Benedict (also listed professionally as Caitlin Benedict), an artist-turned-entrepreneur who describes herself as an “artist at heart.” Her background spans permanent-makeup/body-art tattooing and a prior cake company before opening Bisou.³⁴ She structured the two-business building intentionally for financial resilience, telling The Pitch that “my upstairs will pay for my downstairs so my overhead will be protected.”³ She chose the Westside for its walkability and growth potential: “I love the Westside. I think it’s the second most walkable neighborhood in the city… West Side still has the ability to grow.”³ No corporate parent, franchise, or outside backing is indicated; the business is independent and owner-operated.³²
