Blue Koi is the Chang family’s Chinese-American noodle and dumpling restaurant — open in the KC metro since 2002. The Midtown KC original closed in 2026; the Leawood location at Mission Farms carries on. The same family also runs Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbecue.

Description

Blue Koi is the Chang family’s gift to Kansas City’s noodle scene — a Chinese-American restaurant that has been part of the metro since January 2002, when the original location opened on West 39th Street in Midtown. The family, who also operate Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbecue, built Blue Koi around the idea of sharing their home kitchen with the city: hand-folded dumplings, hand-pulled noodles, and bubble tea that regulars have ordered for more than two decades. The Leawood outpost at the Mission Farms development opened in 2007 and has continued even as the 39th Street original closed in 2026. Scott Chang and his three sisters run both Blue Koi and Genghis Khan, making the family one of Kansas City’s most durable independent Chinese-American restaurant dynasties.

Tier classification

Tier 2 provisional — Chinese-American family, 24+ years KC operators. The Chang family has operated restaurants in the Kansas City metro since at least 2002 — 24 years. Scott Chang and his sisters grew up in and around Kansas City (referenced in local school media); their father operated Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbecue before them. “ — no press source explicitly confirms Scott Chang or his sisters were born in the KC metro vs. born in China/Taiwan and raised in KC as children. If confirmed KC-born/raised, revisit to Tier 1.
