the Ethiopian restaurant in the historic City Market, owner-operated by Ethiopian immigrants Daniel and Selam Fikru since 1995 and a City Market fixture for ~25 years; Tier 1 for its deeply rooted, owner-operated immigrant legacy that introduced Ethiopian cuisine to Kansas City.123
Description
Blue Nile Cafe is an Ethiopian restaurant in Kansas City’s historic City Market (River Market), serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine designed to be shared in the traditional communal dining style.12 The menu spans meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes served atop and scooped with injera, the spongy Ethiopian flatbread used in place of utensils.12 Signature plates include Doro Watt — tender chicken stewed in berbere sauce with herbed butter, cardamom, and nutmeg — alongside Tibbs Watt and plant-based options such as Misir Watt (red lentils) and Gomen (collard greens).24
The restaurant occupies a storefront at 20 E. 5th Street in the City Market, with patio seating overlooking the market and offering pickup, takeout, delivery, and catering.1 It is widely regarded as one of the few sources of genuine Ethiopian food in the metro and runs an all-you-can-eat weekday lunch buffet of salads, soups, and entrees with vegan and vegetarian options.4
Blue Nile carries strong, sustained review standing — roughly 4.5 stars across more than a thousand combined reviews — and has been recognized locally, including being named “Best Ethiopian” by 435 Magazine in 2019.345
Ownership and history
Blue Nile Cafe was founded in 1995 by Daniel and Selam Fikru, who met as high-school students in their native Ethiopia and have lived in Kansas City since 1995.36 Over the decades the Fikrus have been credited with introducing Kansas Citians to Ethiopian cuisine.35
The restaurant moved through several homes before settling at the City Market: it began at 2020 Main, relocated to 39th Street, and finally settled into its City Market location in 2003.6 (One official account also references earlier Midtown and Overland Park locations over its history.)3 Selam has described Kansas City — initially an unfamiliar market for Ethiopian food — becoming home for the couple and their three children, won over one customer at a time.6
