Buzzard Beach is a longtime Westport dive bar at 4110 Pennsylvania Ave, open since 1984. Buzzard Beach is one of Westport’s enduring dive bars, operating in the heart of the entertainment district at 4110 Pennsylvania Avenue since 1984.14 The bar leans fully into its dive identity — its own marketing calls it “Cool. Dark. Beer. KC’s only Five Star Dive!”1 Over the decades it has drawn an eclectic mix, having reportedly served everyone from Harley riders to downtown professionals.4

The signature feature is its outdoor patio, which is enclosed and fitted with overhead heating so it functions year-round, even in winter.4 Inside, the draw is cheap drinks (the bar advertises the longest happy hour in Kansas City) and bar games — darts, pool, and shuffleboard — alongside a much-photographed vintage cigarette machine.4 The kitchen is minimal: the bar itself serves popcorn, and patrons order food for delivery from adjacent Westport eateries.41 (Earlier seed notes describing “famous burgers and wings” appear to conflate Buzzard Beach with neighboring Westport bars; on-site food is limited to popcorn.)

Buzzard Beach dates to 1984 and has operated continuously in the same Westport location for roughly four decades.14 The building it occupies is owned by Bill Nigro, a major longtime Westport property owner whose holdings include space leased to multiple district businesses (the Westport Saloon among them).25 In press coverage Nigro is frequently described as Buzzard Beach’s “owner,” but the more precise picture from reporting is that Nigro owns the building and leases it to operators who run the bar — described as two businessmen, one of whom has run Buzzard Beach since 1988.52 The specific names of the operating lessees are not publicly documented in available sources.

On the morning of May 31, 2022, a fire caused extensive damage to the bar; no one was injured, and adjoining properties were spared.26 Nigro publicly pledged to rebuild, and the bar held a soft reopening in February 2023, returning to regular operation thereafter.23
