a Southern-inspired Kansas City smokehouse and beer-garden in historic Westport. Opened November 2014 by veteran KC restaurateurs James Westphal and Mark Kelpe with competition pitmaster Mitch Benjamin (“Meat Mitch”) driving the barbecue program. Char Bar is a concept of the locally owned, multi-brand Culinary Virtue Restaurant Collective — not Bread & Butter Concepts (see Ownership and history for the seed correction).
Description
Char Bar — full name Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements — is a Southern-inspired smokehouse in historic Westport serving Kansas City-style barbecue alongside a curated craft-beer program. The concept deliberately positions itself as more than a traditional barbecue joint: the owners framed it at opening as “not… a barbecue restaurant” in the conventional KC sense, pairing smoked meats with full-service dining, chicken-and-waffles, house-made sauces, and an unusually large vegetarian section (roughly 20% of the menu).12
The defining feature is the “Amusements” half of the name — a large outdoor beer garden (reported at ~8,000–10,000 sq ft) that opened in spring 2015, equipped with a fire pit, bocce and croquet courts, cornhole, ping-pong, and airplane-tire swings. The site bills itself as “a new kind of urban playground.”134
The barbecue program was built around Mitch Benjamin, the award-winning competition pitmaster behind the Meat Mitch competition-barbecue team and sauce/rub line; his involvement was a key catalyst for the concept.23
Ownership and history
Seed correction (important): The research brief seeded Char Bar as part of Bread & Butter Concepts. This is incorrect and has been ruled out. Bread & Butter Concepts is a separate KC restaurant group founded by Alan Gaylin (BRGR, Gram & Dun, Urban Table, Stock Hill, Taco Republic, etc.); Bread & Butter filed for bankruptcy in 2019 and sold off several brands.56 Char Bar has no ownership relationship to that group.
Char Bar was opened on November 17, 2014 by James Westphal and Mark Kelpe, the beer-centric KC restaurant developers behind McCoy’s Public House, The Foundry, and Beer Kitchen (the “Beer KC” group, dating to McCoy’s in 1997). Competition pitmaster Mitch Benjamin (“Meat Mitch”) partnered on and drove the barbecue concept.123
Today the Westphal/Kelpe portfolio operates as the Culinary Virtue Restaurant Collective, a Kansas City-based, locally owned multi-concept group. Per the collective’s own materials, its current restaurant roster includes:78
| Restaurant | Location |
|---|---|
| Char Bar (Westport) | 4050 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO |
| Char Bar (Parkville) | 15348 Old Town Dr, Parkville, MO |
| Beer Kitchen | 435 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO |
| Meat Mitch Barbecue | 3620 W. 95th St, Leawood, KS |
| Strang Hall (food hall) | 7313 W. 80th St, Overland Park, KS |
(The earlier “Beer KC” concepts McCoy’s Public House and The Foundry predate and overlap the current Culinary Virtue branding; the relationship/status of those original Westport venues under the current collective is ****.) A second Char Bar location has since opened in Parkville, MO, confirming Char Bar as a multi-unit concept within the group.7
No outside / non-KC ownership or institutional investment has been identified for Culinary Virtue; available evidence points to a privately held, founder-led KC group. The absence of disclosed outside investment is consistent with local ownership but is **** as a positive claim (private group; ownership cap-table not public).
