Drastic Measures is a small, speakeasy-style craft cocktail bar in downtown Shawnee, Kansas, opened in June 2020 by veteran bartenders Jay Sanders and Jill Cockson. Focused on pre-Prohibition cocktails and a fair, food-and-tip-free service model, it has become one of the most decorated bars in the Kansas City metro — a multi-year James Beard “Outstanding Bar” semifinalist.

Description

Drastic Measures is a craft cocktail bar in the heart of downtown Shawnee, occupying a renovated 1920 building stripped back to its original rock walls.12 The room is small and rustic with soft mood lighting, lounge seating, and handcrafted light fixtures described as “geometrically and mathematically inspired”; a countertop covered in rulers nods to the bar’s name.2 The menu centers on pre-Prohibition cocktails made with fresh ingredients and high-quality spirits, typically around a dozen signature drinks and riffs on classics.2

The bar runs a distinctive service model: no wait staff, and no food, beer, or wine served. Every staff member does everything — from making and serving drinks to answering the door and mopping — and the ownership has emphasized a structure where staff are guaranteed solid pay and access to health insurance.2 The atmosphere is intentionally unpretentious and neighborhood-oriented despite the bar’s national acclaim.2

Ownership and history

Drastic Measures was founded by Jay Sanders and Jill Cockson, two experienced Kansas City bartenders, and opened in June 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.32 Sanders, formerly of the noted KC cocktail bar Manifesto, is the operating owner and public face of the business.24 The bar quickly drew national attention: it has been named a James Beard Award “Outstanding Bar” semifinalist in multiple consecutive years, and Sanders himself has been a semifinalist in the James Beard Foundation’s “Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service” category.54

Sanders has since expanded in downtown Shawnee, opening Wild Child — a bar specializing in low- and no-alcohol drinks — next door at the corner of Nieman Road and Johnson Drive.14
