El Paso Del Norte is a family-run Mexican restaurant and panadería operating as one business under one roof at 3430 Independence Ave, Kansas City, MO 64124, in the Historic Northeast. Northeast News described it in 2015 as the first Mexican restaurant and bakery to open in the Northeast community, opened on Halloween eighteen years earlier — i.e. Halloween 1997 — by the Iniguez family, and owned and operated at that date by brothers Mike, Armando and Daniel Iniguez, with their father Saul consulting; a 2023 article names Sal Iniguez as owner. It joined the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in March 2015. The kitchen is known for menudo served daily; the attached bakery for pan dulce, pastries and seasonal tamales. Tier 1 — a single-location, immigrant-founded, family-owned Independence Avenue anchor of nearly thirty years.123

Description

El Paso Del Norte sits on the north side of Independence Avenue at Bales, in the densest stretch of Mexican and Central American food businesses in Kansas City. It is not a restaurant with a bakery case bolted on, nor a bakery that also sells lunch: Northeast News in 2015 characterised it as “the first Mexican restaurant and bakery to open in the Northeast community,” and a 2026 corridor feature describes “the attached bakery” alongside “the savory kitchen offerings” as parts of the same visit.13 Municipal food permitting reflects that dual character in its own way — see Current standing below — but the trade name, address and ownership are singular. One business.

The savoury side is anchored on menudo, which the 2026 piece calls “kid-approved” and reports “served daily in generous portions,” alongside street tacos and traditional platters.34 The bakery side runs pan dulce and pastries, positioned as a morning trade — consistent with the 5:30 a.m. opening hour the business kept in 2015.31 In December the operation joins the corridor’s tamal economy, offering pork, chicken, cheese-and-jalapeño and tamales de dulce, with seasonal menu variation and call-ahead holiday ordering.5

The building is also one of the corridor’s mural sites. In October 2022 a mural by Brian Mapes titled Becoming More was unveiled on the east-facing wall of El Paso del Norte, commissioned by the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District as part of a pairing with a Kye Benjamin Stone mural on the Express Stop at 3500 Independence. Mapes also rebuilt the alley behind the restaurant into a mulch-lined walking trail with native plantings and fruit-tree seeds set into painted tyres.2

The Independence Avenue CID names El Paso del Norte, with Elvira’s Cakes, as one of the “immigrant owned small businesses” that define Zone 2 of the district against its national-chain tenants.6

Ownership and history

Founding. Northeast News, October 2015: “El Paso Del Norte was opened 18 years ago on Halloween by [the] Iniguez family.”1 Reckoned from that article, the opening date is 31 October 1997. The article states an interval, not a year — the derivation is recorded here as a derivation, and a first-party or documentary confirmation of the founding year is. Non-first-party listings circulating a 1998 founding are not cited and were not relied on.

Ownership. Two dated accounts exist and are both recorded rather than reconciled:

  • 2015 — “The restaurant is owned and operated by Mike and his two brothers, Armando and Daniel Iniguez. Saul, Mike’s father, consults for the business.”1
  • 2023 — “Sal Iniguez, El Paso del Norte’s owner.”2

“Sal” is plausibly the same person as “Saul,” and the 2023 article’s framing may reflect a generational handover, a simplification, or simply which family member the reporter spoke to. No source found this pass states a transfer of ownership..

Growth. Mike Iniguez in 2015: “At first the building was a small little rectangle. We have slowly been adding things.” He described plans for more food options, a repaired parking lot and tightened security, and framed the site’s advantage as location and parking — “We are in a heavy Hispanic community and have the biggest parking lot.” Staff quoted in the same article included cashier Veronica Estrada and employee Angelica Lopez. The business’s stated sourcing practice at that date was to buy its supplies from other Northeast-area businesses: “It’s all local. We are a part of the neighborhood.”1

Chamber. The business joined the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in March 2015.1

Legal entity. No Missouri corporate filing or KCMO occupational-licence record under the trade name “El Paso Del Norte” was located this pass; the Missouri Secretary of State business search returned HTTP 403 to automated retrieval. Legal entity name is. Note separately that the KCMO business-licence dataset lists DON PRIME MULTISERVICIOS LLC — business type “Financial Transactions Processing, Reserve and Clearinghouse Activities” — licensed at the same street address, 3430 Independence Ave, valid for 2025.7 That is a co-located, separately licensed entity; nothing found this pass establishes common ownership or any relationship to El Paso Del Norte, and none is asserted here..
