Fat Matt’s Vortex is a cash-only dive bar at 411 N 6th St in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas, occupying a building that was previously a funeral home — a crematorium survives in the basement. Joni Bocelewatz took the bar over in 2004; Kansas City Magazine reports that the room had been “unofficially known as a whites-only club” before she desegregated it. The house drink is the Grog, a proprietary mystery shot, priced at three dollars in 2021. Tier 1 — owner-operated, single-location, wholly Wyandotte County. Confirmed operating: first-party Instagram post 3 August 2026.123

Description

Fat Matt’s Vortex sits on N 6th Street in Strawberry Hill, a few doors up the same street as the now-closed Sammy’s Tavern and around the corner from Chicago’s at 6th and Central. Visit Kansas City, KS describes it plainly as a “former funeral home turned bar in historic Strawberry Hill” and “the only place you can get the infamous Grog shot”; its 2025 follow-up adds that the bar is cash-only.45

The building’s past is the bar’s principal identity. The Pitch reports that the address was first a drug store and later a funeral parlor, and that a crematorium remains in the basement.2 Kansas City Magazine names the former operation Stein Funeral Home and reports that the owner has leaned into rather than concealed the basement’s history, and that the Iron Order Motorcycle Club rents the space.1

The Grog is the bar’s signature: The Pitch calls it “a proprietary blend mixed with care” by the owner, and Kansas City Magazine records it in 2021 as “a mystery concoction” selling for three dollars.21 No current price is published first-party.

Widely-circulating aggregator pages assert a 1934 opening, “oldest continuously operating bar in Kansas City, Kansas” status, an Esquire accolade, and 10:00am–1:45am daily hours. None of these were traceable to a first-party or documentary source on this pass and are not asserted here.

Ownership and history

Joni Bocelewatz is named as the owner by two independent published sources. The Pitch (October 11, 2018, Traci Angel) reports that she “took over the bar in 2004” and describes her as a witch and third-degree high priestess.2 Kansas City Magazine (June 28, 2021) states that she purchased the location in 2004, that it “was unofficially known as a whites-only club” beforehand, and that she desegregated it; the same article notes she also owned Sammy’s Tavern at 222 N 6th St.1

Both owner citations predate 2026. The Sammy’s tie is now historically significant rather than current — Sammy’s Tavern closed on June 28, 2026 and its building went up for sale at $385,000 in July 2026; that closure has no reported bearing on Fat Matt’s, which continued posting first-party through August 2026.63
