Description

Fountain City Scoops & Floats is an ice cream and soda-fountain counter at 419 Main Street inside Kansas City’s historic City Market. It opened on July 15, 2023 as a companion to owner Lucas Thompson’s adjacent craft-soda bottle shop, KC Soda Co. The two storefronts are connected by a pass-through window: a customer can buy any bottle from the soda shop’s shelves and have it handed through to be built into a float on the ice cream side.

The counter carries sixteen rotating ice cream flavors, served as half, single, double or triple scoops in a cup, sugar cone or cake cone, plus shakes and malts. Floats are built from a list of 21 house soda bases — root beer, vanilla cream, black cherry, cherry limeade, bubble gum, cotton candy, birch beer and others — or from any bottle on the KC Soda Co. side. More than 25 toppings are offered, including crushed Oreos, toasted coconut, chocolate-covered espresso beans, crushed pecan pralines and rotating candies.

At opening, Thompson told Startland News he had deliberately kept every base menu item under $5 so families with varying budgets could use the shop, and described the concept as an old-fashioned ice cream parlor offering “a momentary escape.” He also outlined plans at that time for soda and kombucha taps and for seasonal float flavors made with fruit sourced from other City Market vendors; whether those were implemented is not established by any source read.1 Thompson is also the owner of Mass Street Soda in Lawrence, Kansas and a co-founder of the Breakout KC escape rooms in the River Market.2
