Friction Beer Co. is a music-forward craft brewery and taproom occupying a century-old hardware store in the heart of downtown Shawnee, opened in June 2023 by two KC-area beer obsessives who spent years perfecting hazy IPAs before finally building a place to pour them.1
Description
Friction Beer Co. opened on June 24, 2023 in the former Hartman Hardware building on Johnson Drive — a roughly 100-year-old structure in the emerging Old Shawnee beer corridor that also includes Transport Brewery and Servaes Brewing Co.12 The renovation took two years, requiring the owners to gut and fully upgrade the grandfathered historic structure to modern code before the doors could open.2
The taproom leans into live music as a core part of its identity — the name itself nods to the friction of a guitar pick on strings — and positions the beer experience around sound as much as flavor.3 The flagship hazy IPA “Sugalumps” uses thiolized yeast to generate tropical fruit notes, and the tap list spans imperial stouts, west coast pilsners, and strawberry blonds alongside the hazy core.34 The patio is dog-friendly and the taproom welcomes families.
Friction holds its own in a crowded Johnson Drive beer district by emphasizing experimentation and a welcoming room over craft-nerd credentialism. Co-owner Brent Anderson has said the goal is to use variety to “have a conversation to get people to open up to what they might like.”3
Ownership and history
Co-owners Brent Anderson and Nathan Ryerson have circled this project for years before Friction opened. Ryerson conceived of a brewery as early as 2011, shelved it, and reconnected with Anderson in the fall of 2016 at a local brewery opening. Anderson had recently departed his position as Creative Director at Boulevard Brewing Company — one of Kansas City’s flagship craft breweries — bringing marketing and brand fluency to the partnership.4 Ryerson came in as head brewer, an avid homebrewer and beer reviewer who had been working the hazy IPA style for seven years before the taproom poured its first pint.34
The path to opening was non-linear: the partnership shifted, investors changed, the pandemic intervened, and supply chain issues delayed the final push past their originally targeted spring 2023 opening by several months.24 They finally opened late June 2023 in a space that required stripping the Hartman Hardware building back to bare structure.
