B-Q — Gates family multi-generation operation since 1946; Perry lineage through Arthur Pinkard (former Perry apprentice who served as the original Gates pitmaster). Henry Perry Heritage Recognition Year-1 honoree candidate alongside Arthur Bryant’s per Heritage-Award-Henry-Perry-Framework.

Description

Gates Bar-B-Q was founded in 1946 when George and Arzelia Gates purchased Ol’ Kentuck Bar-B-Q, a restaurant at 19th and Vine in Kansas City. The Gateses renamed the operation Gates Ol’ Kentucky and ran it as a family business with their three children and the existing pitmaster, Arthur Pinkard — who had previously trained under Henry Perry, the “Father of Kansas City barbecue.”12

That Pinkard tie is Gates’s lineage to Perry. Where Arthur Bryant’s traces its tradition through Charlie Bryant’s direct employment at Perry’s pit, Gates traces its tradition through Pinkard — Perry’s apprentice who became Gates’s pitmaster. The two operations are the two Henry-Perry-derived institutional traditions in currently-operating KC BBQ.

After George Gates’s death in 1960, son Ollie Gates assumed leadership of the operation. The business had already been renamed Gates & Son’s Bar-B-Q in 1956 to reflect Ollie’s active role; the rename signaled the multi-generation continuity the operation has maintained ever since.

Today, Gates operates multiple metro locations + the Gates family’s broader business interests via OG Investment. The Gates family has remained continuously involved across now-four generations of operation — the strongest currently-operating multi-generation Black-owned family business in KC BBQ.

Heritage Recognition rationale (Y1 honoree candidate)

Year-1 honoree case for Heritage-Award-Henry-Perry-Framework:

  1. Documented Perry-lineage via Arthur Pinkard — distinct from but complementary to Arthur Bryant’s Charlie-Bryant lineage; Gates extends the lineage chain through Pinkard’s apprenticeship
  2. Multi-generation continuous family operation since 1946 — eighty years of continuous Gates-family operation, currently in its fourth generation
  3. Black-owned family operation — the Gates family operation is one of KC’s longest-tenured Black-owned restaurant businesses, anchoring an important social-history dimension of the cuisine’s KC story
  4. Multi-location footprint that maintained family ownership — unlike many multi-location-then-acquired patterns, Gates expanded across the metro while retaining Gates-family ownership across all locations
  5. Civic + economic role beyond the restaurant — the Gates family’s OG Investment company is part of KC’s broader Black-business-leadership story, particularly active in the 18th & Vine + Swope Parkway corridors

Heritage Recognition is non-competitive (per Heritage-Award-Henry-Perry-Framework); Gates may also place in the Best BBQ Top-5 competitive ranking — the two designations measure different things.
