Goat & Rabbit is an upscale-yet-approachable craft cocktail bar on the 39th Street West restaurant row in Midtown Kansas City. The bar marries vintage charm with modern mixology, and leans into a deliberately Kansas City–rooted identity: the name references the city’s Pendergast-era political rivalry between the “Goats” (Tom Pendergast’s faction) and the “Rabbits” (Joe Shannon’s faction), two camps that famously came together for mutual gain — a metaphor the owners use for bringing people of different backgrounds together over a drink.12

The drink program emphasizes local and regional product: a curated cocktail list with rotating seasonal and themed menus, a beer program built primarily around Kansas City–area breweries, and a small but well-chosen wine selection available by the glass and bottle.13 The space operates daytime coffee hours alongside evening cocktail service and is 21+.4

Ownership and history

Goat & Rabbit opened in November 2020 at 1804 W 39th Street, in a space previously occupied by Nomad’s Coffee (earlier still, DB Cooper’s).12 It is the second concept from cousins Jugal and Atit Patel, who also own Dodson’s Bar & Commons in Waldo.15 The Patels’ Kansas City hospitality holdings operate under the umbrella of 916 Hospitality, which also became the platform for the Cosmo Burger smashburger brand (which began as a carryout pop-up inside Dodson’s) and later ventures such as Arrow Dart Club.56

The owners have stated their goal for Goat & Rabbit was to develop a spot that fit the identity of the 39th Street neighborhood — spotlighting Kansas City’s drinking culture through local spirits and beers while remaining welcoming. Beverage direction at both Goat & Rabbit and Dodson’s has been credited to Kelsey Earl.1
