Grand Street

Grand Street (Grand Street Cafe) is a modern-American restaurant on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, open since 1991 and family-owned and operated by Rick and Kristi Ghilardi.¹² Originally created under the PB&J Restaurants group, it became independently family-owned in 2003.³

Description

Grand Street is a modern-American (New American) restaurant in the heart of the Country Club Plaza, describing itself as offering “Modern American Cuisine & Dining.”² Menu items include Beef Wellington, pan-seared scallops, cornmeal-crusted trout, and grilled salmon, and the restaurant is a noted Sunday brunch destination.²⁴ It occupies an upscale, remodeled dining room at 4740 Grand Avenue and is a long-running Plaza fixture, marketing itself as “a Kansas City favorite for its modern American cuisine” for over two decades.²

Ownership and history

Grand Street Cafe opened on the Country Club Plaza in 1991.¹ It was created as one of the early concepts under the PB&J Restaurants group, the prolific Kansas City multi-concept operator founded by Paul Khoury in 1987 (other concepts included Coyote Grill, Yahooz, Paulo & Bill, Newport Grill, and YaYas).³ PB&J sold its flagship Grand Street Café in 2003, after which it became an independent, family-owned and operated restaurant.³

The restaurant is owned and operated by Rick and Kristi Ghilardi.¹ In 2013, after roughly 22 years on the Plaza, the Ghilardis brought the Grand Street concept to Lenexa, Kansas (a separate location at 8815 Renner Blvd, in Lenexa City Center).¹⁵
