The business roasts its own beans fresh in Liberty. Co-owner Alex Merrell and his team have built a loyal following through excellent service, a modern yet comfortable environment, and a genuine commitment to the region. The story of Hammerhand is one of perseverance: the original planned location suffered a catastrophic roof collapse in 2016 just before opening, destroying the space and draining funds, yet the team regrouped and eventually opened, first in a temporary downtown spot and later in their current location.

Ownership and history

Hammerhand Coffee was founded by Alex Merrell and a small group of investors with the explicit goal of creating a destination coffee experience in downtown Liberty that would serve the broader Northland community. In 2016, shortly before they were scheduled to open in their first chosen space, the building’s roof collapsed, resulting in the total loss of the location and significant financial setback. Rather than abandon the vision, Merrell and the team secured a temporary space on the Liberty square, where they operated successfully for several years while rebuilding. They have since moved to a permanent location at 249 West Mill Street, where they continue to roast and serve coffee while maintaining their focus on the Northland.
