Hank's Garage and Grill

Hank’s Garage and Grill is a casual, chef-driven neighborhood bar and restaurant opened in March 2025 inside the converted bones of a former Shawnee auto body shop, serving hot dogs, smash burgers, Spam fries, and craft cocktails to a crowd that skews family-by-day and late-night-by-weekend. It is locally owned and operated by Kansas City independent operator Eric Flanagan (also of King G and Jim’s Alley Bar in the Crossroads).¹²

Description

Hank’s Garage and Grill occupies the former Shawnee Automotive building at 5801 Nieman Rd — a car repair shop that the Kwon family operated for years before Flanagan took it over.³ Rather than erasing the industrial patina, Flanagan integrated it: original ceilings and walls retain their automotive history, baby-blue vinyl seats are bolted to walls, and Alex Kwon — the former owner’s grandson — works the floor as a server.³

The concept sits at the intersection of comfort food and sports bar with a chef’s hand guiding the menu. The standout items lean into novelty and nostalgia: hot dogs anchor the menu, housemade Spam fries became an instant best-seller, and craft cocktails are made from scratch at a full bar program. An outdoor patio with a container bar and cornhole provides a separate yard-bar experience on the east side of the property.¹³

Flanagan describes Hank’s as built for a good time and probably a long time — a neighborhood staple for Shawnee rather than a destination-dining concept.³

Ownership and history

Owner Eric Flanagan brought Hank’s to Shawnee as his third KC-area hospitality concept and his first full-service restaurant. His prior ventures — King G and Jim’s Alley Bar, both in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District — featured limited food menus and established Flanagan as a local operator with a feel for casual neighborhood atmospheres.³ Hank’s represents both his first full kitchen operation and his first business outside the KCMO city limits.³

The name “Hank’s” and the garage concept are tributes to the building’s former life, though the origin of the specific name has not been disclosed publicly. Flanagan opened the doors in March 2025 (grand opening the week of March 20, 2025), joining a growing cluster of independent operators revitalizing the Old Shawnee / Nieman Road / Johnson Drive corridor.²
