Description

Holsum Studios & Gallery is an artist-run creative hub in the West Bottoms, occupying the historic Holsum bread building at 1200 W. 12th Street.1 Opened in January 2020, it houses multiple floors of working artist studios — roughly four dozen artists — alongside Holsum Gallery, an artist-run exhibition space that is medium-agnostic and attuned to Kansas City’s emerging arts scene.2 The building’s concentration of studios anchors an annual Open Studios event and, during the district’s First Fridays, draws arts audiences into the West Bottoms.2 The building also hosts other artist-run spaces, including ION Gallery (opened November 2024).2

Ownership and history

Holsum Gallery is the West Bottoms project of Kansas City artist Garry Noland, who established the studios-and-gallery model in the old Holsum building beginning in January 2020 — part of a wave of artist-led adaptive reuse in the district.2 It operates as an independent, artist-run space.
