Hummus and Pita is a Palestinian-owned, scratch-made Middle Eastern restaurant in downtown Overland Park, opened in 2022 by chef-owner Dhiaa Eid, who learned to cook in his father’s restaurant in Jordan beginning at age six.¹²

Description

Hummus and Pita serves Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare in the heart of downtown Overland Park’s Santa Fe Drive district. Everything except the pita is made from scratch — a point owner Dhiaa Eid emphasizes as uncommon among American Middle Eastern restaurants.¹ The menu centers on housemade hummus, falafel, baba ghanoush, gyros, kabobs, and chicken shawarma, with later additions including baked chicken and lamb dishes and sweets such as konafa and soft-serve ice cream.¹³ The restaurant occupies the former Snack Shack space and, after a 2024 expansion into an adjacent former barber shop, nearly tripled its seating capacity, adding larger booths, a water fountain, and an expanded covered patio.³

Ownership and history

Owner Dhiaa Eid is Palestinian, raised in Jordan, where he began cooking in his father’s restaurant at age six and learned to master hummus and falafel.¹ In Kansas City he worked at KC Smoke Burger before spending nearly three years as a partner and cook at Sinbad’s Grill, a Middle Eastern restaurant off Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, prior to opening his own establishment.¹ Hummus and Pita opened in the former Snack Shack location on Santa Fe Drive in summer 2022.¹² In September 2024 Eid completed an expansion into the neighboring former barber-shop space, unveiled September 13, 2024, nearly tripling capacity and adding catering for large groups.³
