KC Cattle Company was founded by Patrick Montgomery, a former U.S. Army Ranger who served with the 1st Ranger Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment and deployed to Afghanistan beginning in spring 2011, leaving the Army as a sergeant (E-5) after four years.12 Montgomery has tied the company’s purpose to honoring his brother-in-law and fellow Ranger, SSG Jeremy Katzenberger, who was killed in combat in 2011; the company states it “exists to honor Jeremy’s legacy by creating meaningful work for veterans.”15

Montgomery filed corporate papers in 2016 and began selling in 2017 — described in coverage as “2017 would have been our first half year of sales.”2 The mission has consistently centered on hiring veterans: the company has employed about a dozen veterans across the Weston ranch and Parkville retail store.12
