Lucky Boys is a West Bottoms dive lounge with a chef-driven kitchen — smashburgers, Nashville-style hot chicken, poutine, and Tuesday/Thursday pizza — slinging quality bar food late into the night in the historic Stockyards district, with the kitchen open to roughly 1am Monday through Saturday.
Description
Lucky Boys is a small, no-frills lounge in the West Bottoms Stockyards district that pairs a classic dive-bar atmosphere — cheap drinks, velvet paintings, friendly bartenders — with a kitchen that punches well above its weight. The concept marries quick, inexpensive food made with high-quality ingredients and a chef’s sensibility to a neighborhood watering hole for local workers.1 The menu draws on bar snacks the founders enjoyed traveling across North America: “Lou-vohl” hot chicken, a juicy patty melt, smashburgers, a catfish basket with housemade caper remoulade, and Canadian poutine.12 During the pandemic the bar added homemade pizza, available Tuesdays and Thursdays, made with custom dough.3 The room is intimate — it seats roughly eighteen to twenty people.3 What makes it a late-night anchor: the kitchen runs to about 1am with the bar open to 1:30am, six nights a week, a rarity for genuinely good food in the city.42
Ownership and history
Lucky Boys opened in October 2015 in the former Grandma’s Bar & Grill space in the West Bottoms stockyards.3 It was co-founded by Justin Norcross along with Keenan Nichols and Daniel Myers, and named for the real-life hangout where the friends would work on their motorcycles, listen to music, and share a drink and a bite.3 Norcross carries deep Kansas City food roots — his mother worked at Stroud’s, and he previously worked at Farm to Market Bread Co. and Local Pig — which informs the bar’s quality-ingredient, chef-driven approach to dive food.3 In 2023, Norcross expanded the food side of the operation by opening Fortunati, a dedicated pizzeria, two buildings away at 1623 Genessee St., after Lucky Boys’ small kitchen could not keep up with pizza demand.3
