Mack True Value Hardware is the independently owned neighborhood hardware store on Johnson Drive in Mission — a full-line paint, garden, and fix-it counter run by Kelly Mack, and one of the anchors that has held the Johnson Drive small-town strip together through road reconstruction and a pandemic.

Description

Mack True Value Hardware occupies 6004 Johnson Drive, in the middle of Mission’s Johnson Drive commercial strip.12 It is a full-line neighborhood hardware store: paint and supplies, lawn and garden, farm and ranch goods, storage and organization, kitchen and housewares, plus the general hardware, plumbing, and electrical stock that a store of this format carries.2 It keeps long hours for its size — open until 8 p.m. on weekdays and open Sundays — and maintains an online catalogue with in-store pickup through the True Value co-op’s e-commerce platform.12

Its owner has described the trade in terms of recognition rather than assortment. “We know people when they come in, we know people by their name. We’ve seen the same people come in for years,” Kelly Mack told KCUR in 2020, calling the Johnson Drive corridor “quintessential small-town USA, right in the middle of a big city.”3

The store functions as a neighborhood civic fixture as well as a retailer: it serves as a public drop-off point for Mission’s seasonal holiday-light and Christmas-tree recycling programmes, alongside the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center and other city sites.45

On the True Value name. True Value is a wholesale cooperative whose member stores are independently owned and operated, not a corporate chain of company-run outlets. The “True Value” on the sign at 6004 Johnson Drive denotes buying-group membership, not corporate ownership. The True Value corporate site’s own line that “True Value has been proudly serving the do-it-yourselfer since 1948” is co-op boilerplate that appears identically on every member store’s page and is not a statement about this store’s founding date; it is explicitly not used as a source for the Established field above.1

Ownership and history

Kelly Mack is the owner. KCUR identified him as the owner of Mack True Value Hardware in a May 2020 feature on Johnson Drive businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, quoting him on the neighborhood’s character and on the store having stayed open throughout.3 Mack’s own professional profile lists him as Owner of Mack True Value from 1985 to the present, and lists a prior role as Manager of The Big Tool Box from January 1983 to October 1985.6

“ — the store’s founding year is not established. No first-party page, press article, or record consulted states when Mack True Value Hardware was founded or when the Mack family took over the business. The 1985 date above is a self-reported start of Kelly Mack’s ownership, not necessarily the store’s founding. Do not publish a founding year until it is sourced to a Kansas business filing, a dated press item, or a first-party statement. A Yelp reviewer’s assertion that the business has served the area “for over 108 years” is a customer’s remark, is unsupported, and is not used here.

“ — the relationship, if any, between this store and the “Mack’s Hardware” name used in some third-party listings, and whether a prior generation of the Mack family owned it before 1985.

In the same 2020 KCUR piece, Mack recalled the strip surviving the two-year Johnson Drive reconstruction of 2013–2014 — “we were lucky they were able to squeak through” — and said he had never seen conditions like the pandemic.3 The store’s continuous operation across both events is documented and is part of why it registers locally as an anchor rather than simply a store.
