the downtown coffee bar and craft-cocktail extension of Made in KC, the Kansas City maker-retail brand championing 300+ local makers and artists. Founded in Kansas City in 2015 (retail) and 2017 (café) by three local friends; a multi-location, locally owned brand. Tier 2 — local with a multi-location qualifier; strong KC-rooted editorial case.
Description
Made in KC Cafe is the downtown coffee-and-cocktail bar arm of Made in KC, the Kansas City maker-retail brand that sells goods from 300+ local makers and artists. The café opened in December 2017 inside the historic building at 1114 Baltimore Avenue — the New Yorker building, between the former Hotel Phillips and Hotel Indigo, a short walk from the 12th & Main KC Streetcar stop.12
The format is a hybrid: a coffee bar fronts a retail area stocked with Kansas City-made merchandise, with seating and event space and a cocktail/bar program. The house coffee blend is roasted locally, with rotating single-origin offerings from area roasters; the original café also leaned on a rotating cast of local roasters from the start.13 The concept’s stated mission — “celebrate the best of Kansas City one drink, one maker, one neighbor at a time” — folds the café directly into the broader Made in KC thesis of giving local artisans a fair, well-trafficked platform.1
