Martin City Tavern is a casual American tavern and pizzeria at 4950 Main Street on the South Plaza, opened in 2024 as a concept of Martin City Brewing Company (MCBC) — the KC-area local brewing-and-restaurant company founded in 2011 by Matt Moore and Chance Adams. It is MCBC’s sixth restaurant and its first South Plaza / Main Street location, occupying a building that was formerly a Spin! Pizza. The “Martin City” name refers to the parent brand and its original south-Kansas-City home neighborhood — not to the neighborhood where this tavern sits.
Description
Martin City Tavern is a casual American tavern and pizzeria at 4950 Main Street, on the South Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Self-described as “your new favorite spot for big flavor and good times,” it serves stone-fired pizzas, smashburgers, a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, wings, chicken tenders, and specialty sandwiches, alongside 16-plus craft beers on tap and locally-inspired cocktails. It offers happy-hour specials, weekday lunch deals, weekend brunch (11 a.m.–2 p.m.), and patio seating.12
The tavern is a concept of Martin City Brewing Company (MCBC), the Kansas City-area brewing-and-restaurant company. Press at launch framed it as a step beyond MCBC’s standard pizza-and-taproom format — a “full-service kitchen” with burgers, sandwiches, and elevated pub fare poured alongside a rotating lineup of MCBC’s own craft beers.3 MCBC’s own website styles the location “South Plaza Tavern,” while Visit KC and listing platforms use “Martin City Tavern – South Plaza”; both names refer to the same venue.12
The space at 4950 Main Street was formerly a Spin! Pizza location.3
Ownership and history
Martin City Tavern is owned and operated by Martin City Brewing Company (MCBC), a Kansas City-area local company founded in 2011 by Matt Moore and Chance Adams. The “Martin City” name comes from MCBC’s original home — the Martin City neighborhood in far south Kansas City, MO — where Moore had purchased a vacant, century-old building (in which his grandfather had once operated a pub) and opened the original MCBC pub at 500 E 135th St in June 2011. Moore’s family also owned the longtime Martin City steakhouse Jess & Jim’s. MCBC added a Pizza and Taproom across the street in 2014 and subsequently expanded across the metro, including Mission Farms (Overland Park, KS, 2018) and Lee’s Summit.45
At the launch of the South Plaza tavern, founder Matt Moore described the company as having grown “from our beginnings as a small brewery in Martin City to now operating six restaurants, a coffee brand and expanding partnerships,” calling the new location “the next evolution of our journey.” The South Plaza tavern opened by Memorial Day weekend 2024 in the former Spin! Pizza space at 4950 Main Street, making it MCBC’s sixth restaurant.3
[!note] “Martin City” = brand, not neighborhood The “Martin City” in this tavern’s name refers to the Martin City Brewing Company brand (and MCBC’s original south-KC home neighborhood near 135th Street), not to the neighborhood where this location sits. This tavern is on the South Plaza at 4950 Main St — roughly 10 miles north of the actual Martin City neighborhood. Classify and tag this page under South Plaza / Plaza, not Martin City.
