Mason Jar Brews & Burgers is a 5,000-square-foot, family-friendly bar and grill at 74th Drive and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, across from the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus. Clifford Dale and his father and brother bought the long-vacant Sports Page bar, took it down to the studs, and opened Mason Jar in late summer 2016 with a scratch kitchen — hand-formed burgers, frenched jumbo wings, 12-inch pizzas — and cocktails served in the namesake jars under mason-jar light fixtures. It seats about 175, runs a rotating “Burger of the Month” and “Jar of the Month,” and has a 22-seat private room.

Description

Mason Jar occupies a rebuilt freestanding building at the corner of North 74th Drive and State Avenue, directly across from Kansas City Kansas Community College. The room is laid out in a progression — booths and low-tops near the entrance rolling into high-tops toward a large square bar ringed with televisions — with finished concrete floors, reclaimed barn wood on the walls, big windows added in the remodel, and the mason-jar light fixtures that give the place its name.1 Feast Magazine’s 2016 opening report put the capacity at about 175 seats plus 25 at the bar and a separate private dining area; the restaurant’s current events page describes the private room as seating up to 22 with a 55-inch TV and its own audio system.12

The kitchen makes most things in-house. At opening, kitchen manager Jason Hurd’s menu was built around six cooked-to-order burgers from fresh-ground beef formed by hand daily, six hand-made signature pizzas plus build-your-own, and jumbo wings that are frenched — the meat pushed to one end of a full chicken leg so the bone becomes a handle — with four or five housemade sauces (traditional hot, grilled barbecue, honey chipotle, grilled jerk, sweet Asian chili).314 Jumbo meatballs cooked low and slow in housemade marinara were an early guest favorite.1 The current menu keeps the shape: burgers (All Fried Up, Bacon & Bleu, BBQ Patty Melt, The JR, a Beyond Burger), sandwiches (pork tenderloin, Reuben, meatball grinder, French dip), 12-inch pizzas with a gluten-free crust option, “Not Your Average Wings,” and a specialties list of fish tacos, fish and chips, chicken-fried steak and chicken, grilled salmon, and buffalo or barbecue mac and cheese.4

The bar side of the name is real: about 25 taps and 50-plus bottles and cans at opening, and a cocktail list served in mason jars — a Lynchburg Lemonade and margarita then, a monthly “Jar” now (August 2026’s Push-Pop Jar: strawberry and orange vodkas, strawberry syrup, orange soda).315 Happy hour runs 3–6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and all day Monday with $3 domestic bottles, $3.50 wells, $4 wine and $10–12 starters.5

Ownership and history

Clifford Dale “has long talked to his father and brother about owning a family restaurant and bar,” Feast reported in August 2016 — “a place where you could get an ice-cold beer or cocktail served in a mason jar along with juicy burgers, hand-made pizzas and jumbo wings.”3 The father-and-sons team bought the former Sports Page bar at 74th and State about a year earlier. The building had sat vacant for roughly five years and needed a new roof, a rebuilt east wall and gas lines run to a kitchen that had been running on propane; the family gutted it to the studs.31 “They really had to work hard to make this place come together because the building had been neglected for so long,” general manager Roger Gibbs told Feast.1 A 2025 local blog adds that the site had earlier been “an old water-slide park” — unverified.6

The restaurant opened in late August 2016 (Feast’s October 17 report has it “now open”) with Gibbs as general manager and Jason Hurd running the kitchen; the site’s footer reads “est. 2016.”317 “The idea was always to build a family-friendly place that felt more like a restaurant than a bar, but that offered great food and drink at reasonable prices,” Gibbs said.1 The brief OpenTable listing describes it as “off 74th and State Avenue” with “made-from-scratch daily entrees or burgers.”8 Whether the Dale family still owns the restaurant in 2026, and who runs it day-to-day, was not re-confirmed in this pass.
