Description
MeMa’s Old-Fashioned Bakery is a scratch bakery on Leavenworth Road in the western half of Kansas City, Kansas, near Piper. The business was founded by Loraine Waldeck and takes its name from her own mother; the official site describes family as the organizing idea of the business and notes that a number of the founder’s grandchildren work there.1
The counter is built on Kansas City’s Central and Eastern European baking inheritance alongside German pastry. The signature item is a traditional English walnut povitica — the rolled, thin-layered nut bread that arrived in Wyandotte County with Croatian and Slovenian immigrants and remains a Strawberry Hill staple — sold beside authentic German apple and cherry strudel, cinnamon rolls, danish, and cookies. The bakery’s best-known novelty is the Chateau Avalon, marketed as “the famous giant cinnamon roll.”12 Recipes for the povitica, cinnamon rolls and strudel are described as unchanged over the bakery’s run.2
The apple strudel was featured in the October 2009 issue of Midwest Living, and the povitica has been cited by KSHB 41 as the area’s best.1 “ — both recognitions are asserted on the bakery’s own site; neither original citation has been located.
Beyond the retail case, MeMa’s sells assorted pastry trays, wholesale product, and online orders.1 Hours are short and morning-weighted: weekdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to noon, closed Sunday.1
