Mildred’s (formerly Mildred’s Coffeehouse) is a family-owned and -operated Kansas City café group serving from-scratch breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee, and house-made pastries. A metro mainstay for more than three decades, it has been owned by the Ashby family since 1999 and is run today by brothers Clayton and Evan Ashby. Its newest and largest location anchors the South Plaza neighborhood at 5060 Main Street.
Description
Mildred’s is a Kansas City café group built on quick-service, made-from-scratch food and coffee. The menu spans breakfast and brunch, lunch sandwiches, salads, soups, house-made pastries, and beverages including kombucha and brunch cocktails. Signature items include the chipotle breakfast wrap and the “Standard” breakfast sandwich, whose eggs are flash-steamed using a dedicated espresso machine — a technique that produces feather-light scrambled eggs without added fat and that drew Food Network recognition as one of the best breakfast sandwiches in the country, described as “basically flawless.”1
The business dropped “Coffeehouse” from its public name roughly a decade ago to reflect a menu that had grown well beyond typical coffee-shop fare, though the longer name persists in local memory and in legacy listings.23
The South Plaza flagship at 5060 Main Street is the largest of the three locations — a two-story space (the former Mission Taco Joint) with a mezzanine that adds seating and power outlets, opened January 10, 2025.23
